Welding Fume Air Scrubbers: Use a 2-Extractor System for Best Protection

If you own or work in an industrial or commercial welding shop, you know that welding (and soldering) produces some of the toughest and most dangerous chemical fumes, gases, vapors and particles that must be removed to be able to work safely. Oddly, however, a lot of businesses only buy one source capture fume extractor for every two stations, or just one unit per station, thinking that will be enough for proper protection. If the welding or soldering station was in an enclosed ‘box’ with a fume extractor running, one source capture fume extractor per station might work. Most workshops, however, have one fume extractor that is usually underpowered or is running with expended, non-absorbent carbon and isn’t capturing all of the fumes, gases, particles—and that means the pollutants are getting out into the main air space in the shop. And when the welder is finished, and the fume extractor is turned off, those other pollutants are still hanging in the air creating a health hazard.

To solve this problem, a 2-extractor system is recommended, with one quality welding fume source capture unit  at the welding or soldering station, and one large room gas & vapor collection system constantly running out in the main area. This will make sure that any residual fumes or gases are captured when the source capture unit is turned off, make all of the carbon filters last a little longer, and provide much better protection for employees. Electrocorp is one excellent fume extractor manufacturer with both source capture units and large room gas collection systems that are proven for commercial and industrial use. And by using this two fume extractor system, you’ll be taking that extra step that reduces liability and employee down time, and actually increases profits because happy healthy employees generally do more, better quality work.

Choose wisely when you purchase fume extractors, however, and order the proper number of fume extractors needed to give you the OSHA required number of clean air exchanges. Don’t let someone tell you that all you need is one source capture unit for every 2 welding or soldering stations—that advice will get you into trouble, and might cost you your business when a sick employee sues and wins for illness caused by improper air filtration or negligence. And stick with Electrocorp fume extraction systems—they have been proven since the early 1990’s and are the #1 choice in many industrial and commercial applications. It’s like knowing the water quality where you live is poor, but buying a cheaper water filter that doesn’t clean the water completely, just to save a buck. It will cost you in the end. As for which fume extractors to choose, we recommend the LD 450, MD 750 or MD 950 for source capture units, and one or more RSU 24 or 48’s for the large room unit.
