Dust Collectors for Wood Working & Carving: Get the Right Unit, Save Your Health.

Woodworking and wood carving both produce all kinds of wood particles, fibers, dust, and fumes that are harmful to breathe. Sweeping and vacuuming aren’t enough, either, because harmful microscopic fibers, dust, and particles remain in the air for hours, and then become airborne again after being disturbed by foot traffic or airflow. And even with a respirator, the filter in that respirator isn’t quite a HEPA filter, and there are times when take it off, or don’t put it on for a while, which allows dust, particles and other pollutants to enter your body that take a long time to get out. And while those pollutants are in your system, they can cause a range of health problems, from simple coughing, sneezing & wheezing, to more serious respiratory issues, even COPD, and lung damage, among other problems.

If you own a business and this happens to employees, those health issues could cost you thousands in healthcare, insurance, OSHA fines, even lawsuits. Not to mention, you could lose your own health, and then you won’t be able to enjoy woodworking the way you used to.

Controlling and preventing damage to your health and your business from dust & particle pollution is easy to do, if you know which type of dust collector you need, what size or output capacity is needed, and what filters are necessary. Typically, most woodworking and wood carving shops have several machines, lathes, drills, grinders, saws, etc that produce wood chips, dust, fragments, particles, etc and it’s ideal to have a source capture workshop particle removal system at each station and a portable room dust collector out in the main area that removes any remaining airborne particles after the individual machine dust extractors turn off (many dust collectors turn off after the machine turns off). This type of system, when used properly, ensures that harmful airborne toxic fine dust particles and fibers are continuously removed both at the source and from the ambient air, keeping particle counts at virtually zero, 99% of the time. Some shop owners choose a combination of a HVAC based cyclone dust collector and the source capture units at each station. Cyclone dust collectors are great for extended filter life and attaching to HVAC systems where they can filter all the air in a building or shop. Either way, problem solved.

One particular brand or manufacturer of woodworking dust extraction systems that we highly recommend is Electrocorp. Electrocorp offers affordable, industrial-strength source capture dust collection units and portable or HVAC based room filtration systems, even custom dust collectors that include powerful commercial-grade HEPA filters that automatically remove those toxic fine dust particles and fibers, as well as a good pre-filter for larger wood and other particles, and strong outputs of 350-1500 CFM or more, depending on how many cubic feet of air space is in the room or workshop. Most OSHA requirements are from 4-6 complete air changes per hour, so if you’re not sure, just ask us and we’ll calculate how many and what size unit would be best.

For example though, if your shop is 20 x 20 x 10 ft ceiling, that’s 4000 cubic feet of air space—so for the room dust collectors, one Electrocorp RSU 24 running at 500 CFM would clean all the air, remove 99% of all dust / particles every 8 minutes, or about 7.5 air changes per hour. Another great unit is the Air Rhino 2000 VS HEPA series, which can handle even larger spaces and even cheaper. For source capture woodworking dust collection units, we often recommend an RSU 12 or RSU 20 CCHR model at each station, all of which have medical-grade, commercial-strength HEPA filters to keep dust and particles away from you, your employees—and your business.
