In most commercial or industrial situations, indoor air pollutants are a concern and must be handled with the proper air filtration equipment to protect employees and customers. What often happens, however, is the predominant issue or type of pollutant in the air takes precedence and an industrial air filtering system is purchased to deal with that specific pollutant only and does not deal with other hazardous pollutants present—i.e. a dust collector is purchased that does not have the additional filters to handle the other pollutants.
This can become an area of liability that can become a big problem for a company if employees do breathe dust-free air, for example, but are still breathing hazardous chemicals that the dust collector isn’t equipped to remove. To be safe, your best bet is to test the air and see what pollutants are really there and in what concentrations, which will give you a baseline for reducing concentrations to within OSHA safe PPM limits (which helps keep you from getting fined and sued by sick employees).
Then if there are both chemicals and particles in the air, you know that you’ll need carbon and HEPA filters to remove those, to start. And, you may need a special carbon blend to remove specific chemicals, which is another reason to test the air or discuss the chemicals you’re using with your air quality specialist. One of the best ways to go is to purchase an air cleaner with both HEPA and carbon to start with, which helps keeps industrial air scrubber cost at a minimum (so you don't have to buy separate dust collectors and fume extractors)
