Large Room Air Cleaners for Small Rooms? Your Best Bet for Severe Allergies & Asthma

Severe allergy or asthma attacks are called ‘severe’ because the reactions to skin or respiratory allergens can be severely unpleasant to sometimes life-threatening. And since those individuals with severe allergies or asthma are hyper-sensitive to very small amounts of dust, dust mites, mold or other allergens, how well a portable room air cleaner is working can be a very important factor. Oddly, many severe allergy sufferers don’t get a lot of relief from HEPA air cleaners and begin to think that they don’t work. Truth is, HEPA room air cleaners are proven to reduce the severity and frequency of allergy attacks, but when there is only small amount of relief, the real problem is likely—low output.

And it just makes sense. If a portable room air purifier isn’t removing the dust, mold and other pollutants fast enough, the person would breathe them first and think that the air cleaner isn’t much good. If a large room air cleaner, on the other hand, is used in a smaller room, research has now shown that the stronger output or faster air cycling time gets the air cleaned faster, and provides much more relief for the patient. Here’s an example: if a small room air purifier is being used in a room size that it’s rated for, such as 100 square feet, with a 100 CFM output , it will clean all of the air in that room in about 8 minutes. If a larger room air purifier is used in the same room, however with an output of 200 CFM, it will remove all of the pollutants in about 4 minutes, 400 CFM, 2 minutes, etc. And that’s with the door closed, which most people don’t do at home or at the office, so the pollutants from other areas is constantly flowing into the room, making a large room air cleaner even more appropriate.

And if a portable air purifier is removing over 99% of the pollutants in the room every 2-4 minutes, there’s very little chance that you or the patient will breathe them, get them on their skin, etc. If you have severe allergies, do make sure that, whatever home or office air purifier you purchase, that it does come with a true HEPA filter, an activated carbon filter for chemical residues (many are proven allergens), an AHAM certified output of at least 200 CFM, and the more the better to make sure the air in your room or office get cleaned quickly and effectively.

Top-rated air purifier brands are best, as well, and usually have all the right features, strong outputs, etc: Aller Air, Austin Air, Blueair, etc, and you’ll usually get a great warranty too, which is important. Most of these portable air purifiers also come with a good pre-filter system that extends the life of the HEPA and carbon filters, which saves you money on filter replacements. So for the best severe allergy or asthma relief, buy a top-rated large room air filtration system with an output above the size of the room you’re buying it for and you’ll get a LOT more relief, faster.
