Industrial & Commercial Dust Collection: Do You Need to Pay for HEPA or Not?

Fibers, dust and other particles produced in a commercial or industrial environment come in many different sizes, shapes, weights and amounts. Depending on the size, weight and what volume of particles, you may need a variety of different types of filters, CFM and air velocity to effectively remove and control them. Surprisingly to many people, you often do not need HEPA filters and sometimes the HEPA filters can decrease the performance of an industrial workstation dust collector, for example and increase costs.

Most people think that HEPA means ‘better’, but this isn’t always the case. HEPA filters stop over 99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, much smaller than the eye can see. While they are very good for things like stainless steel welding fume removal, HEPA’s restrict airflow a lot, slowing down how fast the air purifier removes particles, causing them to be breathed before being removed. If you only have larger airborne particles, HEPA’s will also prematurely clog expensive HEPA filter, creating unnecessary expense, as well.  Many times, a good cartridge type dust collector with a pressure-cleanable MERV 11 or 14 is much better, far cheaper on filter costs, and as a film of dust builds up, effiiciency gets close to HEPA anyway :)  At the same time, commercial HEPA purifiers can be very important if there are super fine dust particles being produced, smoke or people coughing or having other reactions with no apparent reason.

So when deciding what kind of industrial or commercial dust removal system you need, it is often best to speak to an industrial air quality specialist to make sure that you get the best commercial dust collection system for your needs without overspending. At our online store we offer a wide variety of top rated commercial HEPA workstation air cleaners, industrial dust collection systems and more, with custom options available. Residential Air Sanitizers: How They Are Different from Standard Indoor Air Purifiers

When it comes to improving air quality in residential applications, there are a variety of types of pollutants to consider. The obvious particle removal filters and chemical-removing carbon or other media filters are good places to start, for sure, but neither are germicidal or provide any protection from germs. When looking for true air sanitation, this must be approached in a different way as air sanitation is a different category requiring different methods that actually kill airborne bacteria, viruses and other organisms.

Residential air sanitation is usually done with HVAC-attached or portable residential air santizers that use either UV light, ions, ozone, or thermodynamic methods (heat) to destroy airborne organisms. Some HEPA filters may remove larger bacteria, and some do kill bacteria and viruses if the filter has antimicrobial silver in the filter. Without the silver, however, a typical HEPA filter is not germicidal and the pore size is still too large to stop smaller bacteria and tiny viruses from slipping right through. Then the air cleaner will circulate these organisms even more since there is a fan pushing the bacteria or virus contaminated air through the air cleaner!

To prevent this problem, a residential virus killing air cleaner with UV light, ions, ozone, or heat can destroy the organisms so that they are not circulated into your air. Some residential air sanitizers will also include PCO or photocatalytic oxidation, which used titatium dioxide plates and UV, which disintegrates bacterial and viral structures, as well as getting rid of odor causing VOC's. PCO can be found in both HVAC attached air cleaners and portable units. Short duration ozone use is not only safe but also very effective for sanitizing the air, contrary to a lot of misinformation on the internet.

Whatever type of virus or bacteria removing air purifier system you need, our online store offers the best selection of units to fit almost any application, and all at cheap discount prices with free shipping due to our low overhead as an online store. We offer free expert assistance, as well. Call us toll-free today with your questions at 1-800-701-2513. We're here to help!
