Cat Asthma: Reducing Symptoms with The Right Air Purifier

It's estimated that about 1% of cats in the U.S. have asthma symptoms. These symptoms are brought on largely by bronchial irritation which increases mucus that leads to common symptoms including coughing, hacking, inability to take a deep breath, panting, etc. A good portion of this bronchial irritation has been attributed to airborne pollutants, both particle and chemical, that irritate those tissues. And since house dust mites (present in almost all house dust) are attributed to more than 60% of new asthma cases for humans, dust mites are thought to be a significant factor for cat asthma, too. Not surprisingly, in addition to replacing your HVAC filters regularly, many veterinarians are now recommending that have asthmatic cats invest in an air cleaner, as well, to remove the offending air pollutants.

What kind of cat asthma air purifier specifically?  Well, one with a true HEPA filter is a basic requirement, but if you can also get carbon filters and ions, that seems to have the best results for reducing cat asthma symptoms. This is because the HEPA removes over 99% of particles by nature, but the ions actually increase a HEPA filter's efficiency well beyond that, and tend to kill any airborne bacteria or viruses that might be present, on top of deconstructing some of the airborne VOC's that might be there. Plus, if the air cleaner has a quality activated carbon filter, that's even better because that will remove airborne chemical residues, as well.

The truth of the matter is that it's very difficult to tell without extensive, expensive testing to find out if there are chemicals in the air and if your cat is sensitive. So it makes more sense to go ahead and get a purifier with HEPA, ions and carbon, such as most Blueair units for example. And if you have a dog that's causing odors, an air purifier with HEPA, ions, and carbon filters can also be a highly effective dog odor air purifier.

Portable Air Filters: Quick Fix for Dusty Rooms

Dust in rooms isn't just a nuisance that causes extra sneezing, coughing or sinus issues.  Each gram of house dust has been shown in research to contain at least 200 live dust mites, fibers, chemical residues, bacteria and often mold spores and viruses. So, even if you don't notice any 'extra' allergy symptoms, if you see dust on your TV or on top of pictures in your bedroom, office or any indoor room that you spend time in, you can bet that you are breathing a wide variety of pollutants and germs on a daily basis, as the dust had to go through the air to settle on those objects.
A great solution, other than constant cleaning, is to buy a portable air filter, preferably one with a HEPA filter that will remove over 99% of airborne particles, even sub-micron size particles as small as 0.1 microns. Assuming that you buy a portable air filter that is properly sized with an output capacity or CFM that matches or exceeds the square footage of your room, this will keep you and your family from breathing those pollutants and instantly begin to improve your health.
So if you're thinking of buying that dusty room air purifier you've been looking at, do it today, get those allergies and pollutant exposure under control, and enjoy better health--all from that one good decision. At our online store, we offer the best selection of portable air filters for any size home, room or office with the best HEPA and carbon filters at the best discount prices. 4 Super-Easy Inexpensive or Free Indoor Air Quality Hacks!

Just about everyone wants to breathe cleaner air once they realize their indoor air is causing them issues. Of course, the best thing to do for immediate indoor air quality improvement is to buy an air cleaner with HEPA and carbon filters to remove the airborne pollutants.

Ok, great. But what can I do that doesn't cost me a lot or might be free? Good question!  We've got four excellent steps you can take to clean up your indoor air with little to no expense!

1)   Open Your Windows    Cost:  $0

Unless you live in a heavily polluted city, in most cases, opening a window for part of the day will do several things for you: it will add oxygen to your home, bring in just a little bit of ozone, which kills bacteria and viruses, and it will let some of the polluted air in your home get out--which has been proven to be 5-10x more polluted than outdoor air because of insulation and because most air conditioners don't bring in fresh air through the system.  Worried about dust and pollen coming in?  Open your windows early when the dew is still on the ground--this allows air to come in while pollen, etc. is still too wet and can't blow around very well.

2)   Vacuum Your Appliances   Cost: $0

Any appliance that has a fan of any kind, it's very likely to be blowing dust around. This includes hair dryers, ceiling fan blades, computers, TV's, the back of refrigerators, etc.  Just cleaning these areas can immediately help improve air quality.

3)    Make Your Own DIY (Do It Yourself) Air Purifier   Cost: $10-15 if you have a box fan, $30-40 if you don't.

Yep, you can do this too, and for very little money.  Just take your normal box fan and duct tape a medium rated air conditioner filter to the back of it (so that airflow will still be good).  This can go a long way toward removing dust mites, hair, dander, even some odors from your home, if the filter has carbon in it.

4)    Move Unused Paint Cans, Solvents, and Cleaners Outside    Cost: $0

Yes, really. Gather up all that type of stuff you don't regularly use, put it in a trash bag, seal it up and put it outside, preferably in a shed or at least in a garage, not in your basement, closet, under the sink, etc.  This stuff all off-gases and adds chemicals to your everyday air, chemicals that cause health issues over time.
