Air Cleaners For Pet Urine Odor: Better Have Plenty of Carbon…

Many people are not only allergic to pet dander, but also to odors, which explains why they still have allergy attacks even after thorough vacuuming or using an air cleaner that only has a HEPA filter. Pet urine odors are some of the toughest odors to get rid of, primarily because of the compounds in the urine that release strong chemical gases & vapors, even when the urine is dry. And, when some of these compounds ‘sour’ or become oxidized from exposure to air, the smell can become even stronger. And cleaning isn’t always effective since some of these compounds adhere strongly to surfaces, making them hard to remove once dried. The other main factor in cat, dog, or other animal urine odors lingering after cleaning is the fact the animal often drips or smears small amounts of urine in hard to reach places, and it’s just about impossible to find them all. And of course, if the urine is stuck in a carpet, rug or piece of furniture, that’s very hard to ever completely get rid of.

To remove these odorous compounds from the air requires activated carbon, and plenty of it, in the form of a carbon filter in a top-rated pet air cleaner. Activated carbon granules used in this type of air cleaner filter are chemically ‘charged’ in such a way to cause these airborne VOC’s in pet urine to be attracted to them. As air passes by, the urine odors or chemical compounds are removed, which is how the odor is removed-the air is actually cleaned by the carbon. And by using a quality pet air purifier, you’ll also have a true HEPA filter that will remove over 99% of all of the dust, dander, hair, bacteria and other particles generated by from the air as well, all of which also contribute to odors. Don’t get ripped off, however—there are a lot of air purifiers on the market, and many say they help with tough cat, dog, or other animal odors--but many do not work very well for several reasons.

Essentially, if the air cleaner doesn’t have a lot of carbon or a smaller amount of super-activated carbon (like Blueair’s SmokeStop filter—only one that we know of like this), it will not be able to remove all of the urine or other odors because there isn’t enough carbon to trap the chemical compounds. And if there isn’t much carbon, even if’s pretty good quality, it won’t last long because carbon does become saturated. Cheap, thin sheet carbon filters are pretty much worthless, and if they do anything to remove odors, they’ll last a month or two and then need replacing way too often, costing you extra money unnecessarily.

Pet odor air purifiers such as the Austin Pet Machine air purifier, Aller Air 5000 Vocarb, and Blueair 450E or 650E all contain not only high quality carbon that is proven to remove tough odors, even industrial chemicals, but they all contain ‘pounds’ of carbon, anywhere from 9-15 pounds or more, because these air purifier manufacturers know this is what it takes to remove urine and other odors from birds, cats, dogs or other animals. These air purifiers also have top-quality HEPA filters so you won’t have to worry about breathing any dander, hair, dust, etc. And, these filters last anywhere from 2-5 years depending on use, not 2-5 months—better deal, no question.
