So many times, we buy, rent or work in office, building, or home and soon begin to have allergies, asthma, or other health problems that we didn’t have before—and for some reason, we can’t seem to put our finger on what is causing the problem. What’s worse, we often don’t get the full report or know if the building or home has ever been flooded, had smoke damage, had lead or arsenic that was used in the paint or wood treatment. Without that information, we’re literally going in ‘blind’ and unfortunately it’s literally ‘buyer or renter–beware’.
Indoor air quality is a problem for students renting apartments and homes, as well, and actually much more common for apartment buildings to have un-remediated smoke or water & flooding damage, mold, etc., because the tenants move out, a quick cleanup is done to get the next person in, but the mold and other pollutants are still there. Apartment complex owners also bank on the fact that most apartment renters, students, etc., won’t be there that long and will move out before there are any real health problems that might be tied to poor indoor air quality.
So how do you avoid health buying or renting a home, office, or working in a building with poor indoor air quality? The answer is very simple: use an indoor air quality test kit. One company, BHC, LLC has a range of air quality test kits that are easy to use test strip type test kits that you can buy and ‘do it yourself’, mail off the sample and in 3-5 days, get a full lab report on the test. Once you have that report, there’s nothing they can hide—it’s very clear and tells you exactly what organisms, bacteria, mold, or other pollutants are present. You can ask before you buy or rent or just do it discreetly simply by touching the test strip a dusty surface and sending it off. It’s that easy.
Sounds like it’s too simple, but that one test can help make sure you have clean, unpolluted indoor air for you or your family to breathe, and can make the difference between health and disease. So is it worth the $50-$200 for an accurate air quality test/lab report? We certainly think so. And if the owners or renters won’t take the steps to clean up the air, install an air purification system, clean the air ducts, or whatever, then you just move on. At least you found out before you put your health in jeopardy.
Which air test kit is a good one to buy for these purposes? We recommend the Building Health Check’s “Allergen Screen” as this air test kit identifies with laboratory accuracy whether mold, bacteria, fibers, insect fragments or other pollutants are in the air, all in one test for about $74. Other cheap air test kit companies, however, are often cheaper but don’t use accredited labs, aren’t as accurate, have slower return times (some taking 2 weeks or more to get a test report back), or don’t test for several pollutants at one time. With BHC, you get clear, reliable results in 3-5 days so you can quickly make a home or apartment buying or renting decision. Or, choose another building to work in or rent if the test comes back positive for poor indoor air quality. If you’re a business owner, your employees will thank you.
