If you’ve ever used an air cleaner or air filtration system with HEPA and carbon filters, you know what a difference they can make, providing fresh, allergen and odor-free for you to breathe in your home or office.

Usually, when you have to buy replacement filters too often, it’s because the unit does not have a pre-filter to trap the larger particles that clog the HEPA & carbon filters too soon. If you have an air purifier you really like, however, and it doesn’t have a pre-filter, the best thing you can do is to purchase some electrostatic filter material, such as those made for air conditioner vents, and cut this to fit in front of the other filters, so the air passes through that pre-filter first. Most stores like Home Depot, Lowe’s or Walmart will have this filter material in the air filter section. Worst case, get a large Filtrete air conditioner filter and cut to fit. You will save a ton on the HEPA and carbon filters and your air purifier will do a better job—with loner lasting filters.

 

If your air purifier does have a prefilter, it’s important to replace them every 3 months or two things begin to happen: 1) when the prefilter gets clogged, it reduced airflow and increases power consumption = a higher electric bill, and 2) some of the particles that the pre-filter trapped begin to slip through, and clog the HEPA filter, which is what the prefilter is designed to prevent. Buying replacement air cleaner pre-filters ensures that you get the maximum proper life from your HEPA and carbon filters, and helps keep power usage low.
