Fumes, gases & vapors are most often thought of as an industrial or commercial air quality issue, only necessary for welding, soldering or similar applications. However, there are a lot of other applications and businesses where harmful fumes are present and need to be extracted to prevent allergies, respiratory problems and other issues—and if you have even one employee, you’re subject to OSHA regulations, and large fines for noncompliance.
What other applications? Well, there are quite a few fairly common types of businesses where fume extraction can be really important. Auto maintenance or service departments routinely have a good number of pollutants floating around in the air such as carbon monoxide, and other vapors from solvents, grease, paints, parts, rubber, etc. All of these pollutants have been shown to cause health problems when inhaled over time and there are specific OSHA regulations for acceptable limits for these pollutants. Funeral homes use lots of chemicals, too, and really need a fume removal system to prevent illness. What about a pool or pool supply store with a bunch of pool chemicals on the sales floor or in the warehouse—guess what? Those chemicals are slowly released into the work area and it’s hazardous.
Work at a landfill or water treatment plant? There are all kinds of chemicals and gases present in these applications, obviously methane gas, chlorine, fluoride and many more that are definitely harmful and some are proven to cause cancer. If you’re a technician or a supervisor at one of these places and they don’t have a fume collection or gas filtration system in place, talk to your supervisor immediately—and tell them you want to know what the levels are for all pollutants in your work area.
You and the other employees have a right to know. And if they blow you off or won’t ‘look into it’, you can contact OSHA.gov to make them do something about it—or just find another job! No one should have to run the risk of serious illness while trying to make a living. And—if you own the business and you get an OSHA citation for poor air quality–and your insurance company finds out about it–your rates will be going through the roof!

What about home workshops, or small cabinet shops? What about a small paint store or body shop? All of these routinely have significant amounts of fumes, gases, & vapors floating around the work areas. Yes, employees do wear respirators some of the time, but often they take them off or don’t wear them at all, and a lot of respirators are not equipped to fully filter chemical gases & fumes—they mostly just filter out particles and a little bit of the gas-based pollutants. That’s not enough to remove harmful fumes properly.
Why is a fume extraction system better? Because fume extractor systems have anywhere from 20 to 100 pounds of activated carbon filters (and some have HEPA filters for particles as well) that are designed to remove fumes very well. You have to have significant—as in ‘pounds’—of activated carbon to properly remove fumes, unless it’s a military carbon sheet, but even that will become saturated pretty quickly with high chemical concentrations.
So if you own or work in a business where fumes are present, take care of your health, your employees’ health, or help other employees avoid unnecessary health problems by installing some kind of fume extraction system. A fume extractor or two is a lot cheaper than OSHA fines, lawsuits, & higher insurance rates.
