Replacement HEPA filters, though very effective for removing particles and keeping allergies down, they aren’t cheap, especially for some brands of room air purifiers. And if the air cleaner doesn’t have a pre-filter to stop the larger particles from clogging it up, that HEPA filter is only going to last about one quarter of what it’s supposed to—which means you have to replace the HEPA filter every 3-4 months instead of 1-2 years—and that can eat into your budget big-time! Why? HEPA filters are designed to trap the smaller, more dangerous micro-particles, usually around 0.3 to 0.1 microns in size. When there is no pre-filter on the air purifier, or the HEPA filter is not washable (most are not washable) the larger particles clog the HEPA filter prematurely and prevent airflow, which keeps them from doing their jobs.
So what’s a good solution to minimize having to buy replacement HEPA air purifier filters too soon? Well, one thing you can do is install vent filters–placed in the vents that blow air into your room. What’s a vent filter? It’s usually made of a foam material that is electrostatic (becomes charged as air flows through), and this charge makes particles stick to it. You can buy both pre-cut filters and sheets of filter material at stores like WalMart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc, and they are usually very cheap. These vent filters will stop a good amount of the larger particles that would normally clog a HEPA filter. For room air cleaners that don’t have a pre-filter, some people cut a piece of the vent filter material and place in front of the HEPA filter. And no, this won’t affect how quiet the air purifier is. Having some kind of pre-filter plus installing vent filters will not only make your HEPA filter last longer, but will definitely improve overall indoor air quality and help keep allergies under control.
Pet owners often have to replace their HEPA filters more than anyone else, because hair and hair fragments clog the HEPA filter very quickly. Using a vent filter will definitely help prevent hair and dust from prematurely clogging your HEPA filters if you have pets. And if you do have pets, make sure to brush them or have someone do this to prevent excess hair from blowing around. And, there are a couple of other things you can do to make your HEPA filters last longer—you guessed it: regular vacuuming of carpets, floors, upholstery, pet bedding, and mopping. Most good vacuums have a HEPA filter and the more you can vacuum and mop those particles up, the less they will polluting your indoor air and using up your HEPA filter.
And yes, vacuuming out a HEPA filter does help some, so you can do that, too. Got dusty clothes? Don’t throw ‘em in the closet—throw them directly into the washer. This keeps the dust from having a chance to get out onto your floors. And finally, it seems like commons sense, but make sure to replace your air conditioner filters regularly, and use one that is 1200-1500 or allergy rated. They’re a lot cheaper than replacement HEPA filters and they can stop a lot of dirt, dust, and other allergens from floating around in your room.
For industrial or commercial work sites, the same applies: regular sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, etc, can really cut down on buying replacement HEPA filters too soon. Source-capture dust collectors also help prevent large particles from clogging a HEPA filter. However–when you seem to be sneezing and coughing more than usual, it’s probably time to buy a replacement HEPA filter, especially if the filter is over 6 months old. Most people that don’t do the things listed above or have air purifies without a prefilter, tend to have to replace their HEPA filters every 6-8 months on average.
