It’s been shown in studies for years that good health has a lot to do with quality exercise, sleep, good eating habits, vitamins, etc. And your eating habits, how much water you drink, whether you take vitamins or not, etc. seem to have more of an effect on your health than anything—other than the air you breathe, that is. That’s right. You can do your best to do all the right things, eat the best food, exercise, sleep well, strengthen your immune system and more, but more recent studies show that if you continually breathe polluted air, eventually these pollutants will cause problems, regardless of your other efforts—problems like allergies, asthma, skin rashes, cancer, heart disease, even premature aging!
Don’t think you have air pollution in your home, room or office? Think again. On a more obvious level, if you see any dust that has accumulated or if there are any odors you notice when you first walk in the door (before your nose gets used to it), you have air pollution, plain and simple. Dust that has accumulated means that dust was pretty well distributed in the air—some of it settled on furniture, window sills, etc, and some of it you inhaled. Dust isn’t just dust, either. It’s been shown that most home and office dust is composed of dust mites, mold spores, pollen, fibers, bacteria, viruses, and other particles. And odors aren’t just ‘smells’—they are composed of airborne chemicals, gases, and residues from everything from paint, solvents, cleaning products, carpets, copier toner, chemicals used to treat wood used in the construction of your home or office, etc.
And when you inhale enough of these pollutants, the body finally sounds the alarm and begins to react. That’s when we notice allergies, asthma, or other health problems and can’t seem to figure out what happened or where it came from. Mystery illnesses, headaches, extreme sensitivities or allergies, recurring coughs and colds, sinus trouble, etc. can all result from polluted air created a polluted internal environment in our bodies that causes disease and discomfort. Why is indoor air quality such an issue? That’s mainly because Americans are now spending over 90% of time indoors and breathing about 3000 gallons of air per day. If 90% of that air is polluted and you don’t have an air purification system in place, that’s 2700 gallons per day of air loaded with dust, bacteria, viruses, chemicals, etc going into your body. That’s a lot, and it can really cause problems.
The good news is that cleaning up your indoor air is very easy to do with quality portable home and office air cleaners. The best air cleaners (not necessarily the most expensive) use true HEPA filters to remove 99.97% of these pollutants, and many include activated carbon to remove the chemicals and gases, leaving nothing but clean air. And why portable air cleaners? Because they are just that—portable, which means you can take the unit with you instead of having to buy multiple HEPA air cleaners. Then after running the air purifier for a week or so, open up the unit and take a look at the prefilters and HEPA filter (usually white in color). That dirt, or discoloration you see is the dust, mold, bacteria, etc that you’ve been breathing prior to buying your portable air purifier—but now, the air purifier trapped it and you didn’t have breathe it. You might even notice that you aren’t sneezing or coughing quite as much, or don’t feel as tired early in the day.
Should you just go and buy any old air cleaner at your local retail store? Absolutely not. You wouldn’t buy a certain brand of soap if it’s known not to clean very well and leave dirt behind so you have to wash again, would you? The same is true with many cheap air cleaners found at these retails stores. A quality home or office HEPA air cleaner will include a true HEPA filter, an activated carbon filter with at least 2-3 pounds of carbon, a strong motor to cycle all the air in a room in just a few minutes, and a good warranty. Most cheap air cleaners don’t offer all of this and you need all four, at a minimum, to effectively clean the air. Anything less will ultimately leave pollutants in the air, and be a waste of money when you have to buy a replacement, since cheap air cleaners are made of cheap materials and not designed to last. The cheap air cleaner manufacturers are counting on the fact that you’ll go back to the store and buy another one when the first one breaks, so they can have repeat income from your hard earned money. Not a good deal. The best quality portable air cleaners or home air filtration systems do cost a little more but they last for years, have solid warranties, use less energy, and clean the air very well.
