Industrial Air Cleaners: Handling Chemicals? Got Employees? A Filtration System Could Save Your Business

If you have employees that are handling chemicals, or exposed to chemical fumes or other harmful industrial air pollution, having the right industrial air filtration system in place could save your business. It’s true. Not having an air purifier system, or not having the right unit could lead to health problems for your employees, OSHA fines, lawsuits, and possibly the destruction of the business you’ve worked so hard to establish. And it doesn’t have to be some big industrial company to need a filtration system—nail salons, laser engraving studios, and other pollution-laden work sites etc, need proper air cleaning, as well.

And a lot of business owners think that ‘ah, there’s not that much fumes’ or ‘I think I have enough ventilation, don’t need a removal system’. These assumptions are dangerous in several ways. First, some industrial pollutants are actually odorless and tasteless, such as carbon monoxide, but they are just as deadly. Even if the room or warehouse where your employees are working sems to have OK ventilation, your employees are still breathing a percentage of the pollutants mixed with the ‘fresh’ air. The problem is that most air pollution is something that we can’t see or just ‘get used to that smell’—when these pollutants are very small harmful particles, fibers, and chemicals in the air. And we don’t notice until it builds up in the body and causes health problems. At that point, you’ve got problems. And your insurance might not cover you at all if it appears that you were negligent regarding proper air quality control.

The good news is that industrial air quality control is not difficult to maintain, and these potential issues can usually be avoided. All you need is the proper filtration system designed for the space, number of stations where employees are working, and type of pollutants and you’re good. The best Industrial air cleaners use HEPA or Super HEPA filters to remove over 99% of tiny particles and fibers, and quite a few pounds (usually 36-120 pounds) of specially activated carbon tuned for the type of chemical pollutants present in the room, warehouse or office where filtration is needed. Some units are portable as well, and for some commercial situations where work sites or location of chemicals storage or use changes frequently for example, a portable unit can be very useful as it can be moved directly to the area where air cleaning is needed. For other situations where a large amount of air needs cleaning on a regular basis, such as a warehouse, one or more large volume ‘air scubbers’ may be needed to properly address air quality within OSHA standards, which usually require 4-6 complete air changes per hour. Think of your industrial or commercial air cleaner system as a good secondary form of insurance for your business. And over time, as you have less employee downtime, less equipment maintenance, less cleaning expense, etc, the unit will more than pay for itself. Plus, it’s usually tax deductible.
