EPA Rates Poor Indoor Air Quality in Top 5 Health Threats--Use an Air Purifier to Avoid The Danger

The EPA in 2011 cited indoor air quality in the ‘top 5 major threats to our health’, along with heart disease, cancer, etc. And you know when the government finally puts out a warning about something, 1) it’s serious, and 2) it’s been proven, and 3) it’s been going on for quite a while. And it only makes sense since there are a lot of studies that clearly show that nearly all homes and offices have significant levels of indoor air pollution.

That, coupled with the fact that, as of 2012, Americans are now spending well over 90% of their time indoors, at home or the office, creates a lot of opportunity for air quality related health problems. Humans breathe in about 3000 gallons of air per day, and without an air purification system, if we’re indoors 90% of the time, that is 2700 gallons of polluted, allergy and illness-causing air we, our babies, and the rest of our families are breathing—every single day.

What types of home or office air pollutants are we talking about? It’s mainly dust and fumes or gases from cleaning products, solvents, carpets, paint, copier toner, etc. Ah, but dust isn’t just dust. A recent analysis showed that dust brings with it a variety of other pollutants, such as dust mites, dust mite fragments and waste products, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, bacteria, viruses, and more.

Dust mites and related particles are some the highest allergy triggering substances known to man, and currently responsible for nearly 60% of asthma cases worldwide. Do a Google search on dust mites and you’ll see what we are talking about. And then we have those allergy and asthma-aggravating vapors and gases that we can’t see that have also been found to be present in sufficient amounts in almost all homes and offices, as well. Add to that pollutants from building materials used to build your house such as treated wood that often leaks arsenic, fiberglass from insulation, any smoke related pollutants that are present, and you have significant potential for indoor air pollution. And again, without a proper air purifier or filtration system in place, you’re pretty much guaranteed to be constantly breathing in those pollutants.

Don’t think you have indoor air pollution or don’t need an air purifier? An easy way to tell is to look around—if you see any dust on furniture, shelves, etc., or smell any kind of different odors as you walk into your home, room or office, air pollution is there. Yes, cleaning does help, but then we often notice that in a few days dust has settled on those surfaces again, right? That means that your home, room or office is constantly releasing pollutants, which is normal, but not good to breathe. If you have smokers in your home, residual smoke odor, or other bothersome odors, you’ll definitely want a quality air filtration system as those odors are actually chemicals, tar, and other troublesome allergens & particles that are floating in the air—and if an quality air cleaner doesn’t remove them, your lungs will take them in. There is a saying ‘you can either use an air filter or your body can ‘be’ the air filter…the latter of which is definitely not healthy. If you own an industrial business where air quality is polluted on a regular basis, having a quality air purification system in place can mean the difference between healthy employees and profits—or sick, low producing employees, lawsuits, and OSHA fines.

Cleaning up your indoor air, whether it's in a home or commercial application, is easy and inexpensive when compared to how much you can save on allergy medications, boxes of Kleenex, gas spent going to the store, the doctor, even cleaning products--not to mention preventing lawsuits from employees in commercial situations. The best electronic air cleaners or air filtration systems use both HEPA and carbon filters, negative ions and sometimes UV light.

The HEPA filter removes and controls allergens like dust, mold, pollen, pet dander, and the activated carbon removes the gas or odor based pollutants, such as paint fumes, smoke, etc. Some units even have electronic sensors to detect when pollutants are in the air, which is great for conserving energy and making sure that pollutants are removed as soon as they are detected. Be certain, however, to only buy an air purifier that includes a true HEPA filter, as only true HEPA filters are certified to remove 99.97% of the particles on the first pass. And make sure the unit has a solid amount of activated carbon, at least 2-3 pounds (or between 36 and 120 lbs for industrial air cleaning situations) to effectively remove the gas-based pollutants.

Cheap air cleaners are not the answer, however, such as many of those found at typical retail stores. The problem with these cheap air cleaners is that they most often have a sub-standard HEPA ‘type’ filtration system (not true HEPA) and small, cheap, low output fan. A cheap air purifier’s fan doesn’t circulate the air very fast (can take an hour or more to cycle the air in a room), and this slow operation causes us to breathe a lot of the polluted air before the air purifier can clean the air, which aggravates allergies and asthma, and really makes a cheap air cleaner a waste of your hard-earned money. The best top rated air purifiers have strong motors that can remove virtually all pollutants in a room in less than 5 minutes, and continually makes sure you are breathing clean air in your home or office, and even reduce the chances of catching a cold or flu.
