Whole House Air Cleaners & Vent Filters: A Great Clean Air System for Your Home

It’s a known fact that over 80% of homes today have some level of indoor air pollution. To deal with this problem, most people begin doing research on air purification to determine what kind of filtration system will work best for their situation. And there are some very good portable or room air purifiers with HEPA and carbon filters that do an excellent job of cleaning the air in a given room, often quickly reducing allergies and asthma symptoms. But what about the rest of the house, or the other rooms? For most, it is often cost-prohibitive to try to buy an air purifier for each room, and even the best air conditioner filters are not capable of removing particles, gases, and chemicals like good room air cleaners.

In most homes, not only is the air conditioner coil dirty, but the duct work is also loaded with dust, dust mites, mold, bacteria, mold and other pollutants, and would require a costly duct and coil cleaning job to prevent this stuff from blowing out into the air in your home. So what is the best, most cost-effective way to clean the air in your whole home, without paying for duct cleaning? Two things: a whole house air purification system and filters installed at the air vents (where air blows out into your room). The best solution we’ve found, other than installing an allergy rated air conditioner filter before the coil is to install a whole house air cleaner after the coil, and install electrostatic or pleated filters at the air vents.

A good whole house air filtration system will have a HEPA filter to remove 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns, and a carbon filter to remove any allergy or asthma-symptom causing gases and vapors. Then, installing filters at the vents will stop any remaining particles, dust, etc., that’s still in the duct work after the whole house system.

Together, a full house air filtration system and the vent filters will give you air as clean as you can get without a duct cleaning job. And whole house air cleaners are easy to install, quickly attaching to the air conditioner or furnace duct. This system will give you clean air in the entire home without the extra expense of several room air purifiers or having to move the air cleaner around to different rooms all the time.

Make sure, however, that you get your whole house air cleaner system from a reputable company, and that it includes a true HEPA filter and a good amount of activated carbon, nothing less. There are brands like Aller Air, for example, that make excellent, affordable whole house systems and have good warranties. Also, we recommend that you go ahead and buy a set of replacement filters for the unit. This ensures that you get the lowest price on filters, instead of waiting 2-3 years to buy them when they need replacing—which is just about when price increases happen. And, be sure to change the pre-filters as this maximizes the life of your HEPA and carbon filters. The vent filters can be found at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and are very cheap.
