Dust Collection Systems: Reduce Insurance Costs, Equipment Maintenance Costs and More.

With the current economy and new administration, most industrial, commercial, even home workshop business owners are looking for any way they can to cut costs. And if your business involves any process that produces dust and other harmful particles, you might be surprised at how much this ‘dust’, if not removed, cuts into your bottom line.

Why? Very simply, dust, fibers and particles in the air clog and cause a need for more frequent maintenance, which costs money. And if you have employees, dust can cause a variety of health issues, which also cost money in the form of lost productivity, higher insurance rates, higher health care costs, and even lawsuits. Controlling this dust, however, is actually very easy to do with a proper commercial-grade dust collector. And home woodworking shops need dust collection systems even more than some industrial applications because the dust is being released into an attached to your home—where you live, sleep, and can be exposed to toxic dust up to 24 hours a day.

Essentially, if you use grinders, saws, lathes, drill presses, routers, wood carving tools, sandblasters, sanders, planers or anything that releases metal, wood, ceramic or any other dust, you’ve got to have a dust collection system or your compromising the health and safety of you, your family, and employees if you have any. Buying a quality dust removal unit can easily pay for itself simply with fewer health issues, allergies, asthma attacks, and even lower insurance rates (just ask your insurance agent if having a dust extractor or dust filtration system gives you a discount on your rates). And if there is less dust floating around, there is less dust to clog up machines, and less of a need to call pay for maintenance or repair at $50 a hour or more.

There are several types of dust collectors, but the two main categories are the standard dust collector, and cyclone dust collection systems. Standard dust collectors or extractors use particle filters, and some use a series of filters—dust prefilter and HEPA filters—to thoroughly clean the air and capture over 99% of airborne particles and dust. Cyclone dust collectors use high-speed air much like a small tornado that creates suction and removes the particles without the use of filters. The advantage of using cyclone dust collectors is not having to replace filters, which reduces expense and employee or your exposure to contaminants when changing filters. Choosing a cyclonic dust collection system can be especially important if the dust is particularly toxic, though it is recommended that you keep your respirator or mask on when emptying the unit.

The bottom line is this: whatever kind of dust you produce in your home workshop or industrial business, removing it from the air keeps maintenance costs and employee health costs down, productivity and revenues up. And having a dust collection system in your home workshop can mean the difference between enjoying your hobby illness free, or creating sickness for you and your family.
