Replacement Air Filters: Even More Important Than Water Filters?

Most people use a water filter to make sure they have clean water to drink for themselves and their families. And that’s because most people use or drink 1-2 gallons of water a day, including cooking, drinking, and they realize that there are harmful pollutants in most tap water sources. But did you know that most humans inhale about 3000 gallons of air per day and over 90% of that inside our homes, rooms, and offices? That makes having clean indoor air very, very important, since over 90% of homes and offices have indoor air that is polluted with dust, dust mites, mold, bacteria, fibers, chemicals and more—all of which can and do cause illness and aggravating allergies. That means, if you’ve made the smart decision to buy an air cleaner, replacing your filters can mean the difference between health or recurring illness, colds, flu, trips to the hospital, etc for you and your family. This is even more true for those that work or spend time around industrial or commercial situations and rooms where levels of indoor pollutants can be 50 to 100 times more concentrated—and 50 to 100 times more dangerous.

Which filters should you replace? All of them. Why? Because quality air purifiers usually have 2 or 3 different filters that perform different functions to give you the cleanest air possible. The pre-filters trap the larger particles so that they don’t prematurely clog your HEPA filter, which can cause costly 3 month HEPA filter changes. Ouch. The HEPA filter is designed to trap the smaller, more dangerous particles down to 0.3 or 0.1 microns. These particles are dangerous because they are small enough to get into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream. The carbon or charcoal filter cartridge traps airborne chemical, gas, and vapor residues from cleaning products, solvents, paints, carpets, laundry supplies, and other substances that are constantly releasing gases into rooms in homes or offices. All of these filters, HEPA, carbon or charcoal, and prefilters do have a lifespan and the manufacturer usually states on the package or in a manual or package insert when to change the filters. If you don’t see any indication as to when to change the filter kit, use this rule of thumb: prefilters every 3 months, HEPA and carbon filters every 1 to 1.5 years. Some air purifier filters will last 2-3 years under normal conditions, but to be safe, we recommend changing them as indicated above. If you don’t, the filters become clogged and don’t allow air flow, which causes a ‘backflow’ situation, which pushes polluted air out of the unit, not through the filter. This actually increases allergies and other health problems by circulating polluted air more because now this polluted air is being blown around the room by a fan in the air purifier.

And the recommendation of buying replacement air cleaner filters at least every 1.5 years applies only to home and room air purifiers. Hospitals need to have their air filters replaced on or before recommended replacement time, without fail, due to the infectious diseases that can be spread by polluted air. If you spend time around or work in an industrial or commercial situation where the air needs to be cleaned daily (which includes virtually all industrial situations), the filter kit may need replacing even sooner, such as every 6 months to 1 year, all depending on what the level of indoor air pollution is for that area. Some industrial pollutants are actually combustible when trapped by a carbon filter and will ignite under the right conditions if the filter is overly full, so in that case, it is of utmost importance to replace industrial and commercial air filters as recommended by the manufacturer to prevent an explosion. Check with the replacement air purifier filter manufacturer to determine actual filter life for the conditions and pollutants being removed. If your boss needs a reminder to change the filters, find a way to do that—maybe ask a questions about how long the filters last? Most times, he or she will at least think about the filters long enough to realize that replacement air filters need to be purchased.
