Removing Cat Odors: Four Steps to Cleaner, Fresher Air.

Removing cat odors can be really tough sometimes, and quite embarrassing when friends or family visit. Not to mention the fact that cat odors (especially cat urine odors) are actually airborne chemical and particle pollutants that also cause more frequent allergy, asthma, & respiratory issues. So, you clean, change the air conditioner filter, bathe the cat regularly, even buy a pet air purifier–and the odors are still there. What’s the problem? Take it from someone who has had indoor cats for many years, removing cat odors requires a four step process—and the correct four steps can make all the difference.

First, obviously regular vacuuming and mopping of areas where the cat goes most often is very important, including using a litter with a combination of three elements–carbon, baking soda and zeolite to effectively absorb cat urine odor. And of course, cleaning out the litter box every day. Second, wipe down furniture and spray the air once a day with Febreze Pet spray—the only spray that actually has the right technology that chemically blocks odor molecules—and wipe their paws with an antibacterial wet wipe once a day. Three—limit where the cat goes, since wherever they go, like it or not, they will mark furniture, walls, and other items with saliva and oil from their coats, spread dander particles (including tiny litter box particles) and all of that contributes to odor.

And fourth, buy an air purifier that has a true HEPA filter, several pounds of activated carbon, and negative ions, if possible. The HEPA filter will remove the thousands of tiny airborne cat hair, dander, & particles that contribute to odor, the activated carbon filter, with enough activated carbon, will remove the airborne chemicals that come from cat urine and other odor causing molecules. And, the negative ions destroy bacteria and other things that cause odors, freshening the air and naturally reducing allergies & other respiratory issues by increasing the efficiency of the other filters. A real cat dander air cleaner has HEPA and ions, ideally--i.e. Blueair 650E.

For the best cat odor air purifiers that feature all of the above—true HEPA filter, activated carbon filter and negative ions—we recommend Blueair and Austin Pet Machine air cleaners as your best pet odor air purifiers . Both are highly effective for removing cat dander & urine odors, and Blueair units are amazingly quiet. So if you take all four steps above, and use one or more Blueair air cleaners, 650E for larger rooms, 203 for smaller rooms, you will soon notice very little cat odor. TIP: install an air conditioner filter that is allergy rated and has carbon in it for a little extra odor removal power, and keep your indoor humidity around 40% to keep odors from lingering.
