Best Air Purifiers for Pet Allergies: Look for Quality Filters First

A lot of pet owners, especially those with allergies, are still looking for a better electronic air purifier to properly control and remove the hair, dander, & odors effectively from the air in their home. And this is because they know that if their indoor air is cleaner, there will be less stuff in the air that sets off their allergies—which is smart because it’s been proven in research that the best allergy reduction is achieved when pollutants are removed better from the air. Unfortunately, however, there is still a lot of confusion as to which air purifier system or portable unit is really the best for those with cat, dog, bird or other animal allergies.

Well, we’d like to make the answer to this question very simple and help those with pet dander & hair-related allergies and asthma get the relief they’ve been searching for. Top-rated air purifiers are usually rated highly because of three main things: performance, ease of use, and cost. And the main thing affecting performance is usually the filters.

Your best pet allergy air cleaners are going to have both true HEPA filters to remove and control 99% of all particles as small as 0.3 microns, and a carbon filter with a good chunk of carbon in it—like anywhere from 4-25 pounds or more of activated granular carbon (not crushed)—and the more carbon, the better. If those two types of filters are included with air cleaner you’re considering as a pet air cleaner, then it’s probably going to do a pretty good job of removing the pollutants that set off your allergies or asthma. Makes sense, right? Of course. And the air purifier doesn’t have to specifically be called a ‘pet air cleaner’ to be effective or work even better than one that IS called a pet air cleaner. The Blueair 650E, for example is an excellent air filter for pet allergies because it provides HEPA particle removal and ions that clean the air even further.

Frankly, if the unit has more carbon or better HEPA filters and a higher output (look in specifications or technical info for CFM or CADR), it will usually outperform an air purifier that is labeled a pet air purifier but doesn’t have the same filters. That’s what we’re talking about here—the performance is mainly in the quality of the filters. So whatever air purifier you choose, if you make sure the unit has a true HEPA filter and a good amount of activated granular carbon, it’s probably going to do a great job removing the cat, dog, bird or other animal dander, hair & odors that cause most of the allergies you’re dealing with. Just be sure to read the fine print or the technical specification to make sure of what you’re getting—and you’ll probably get relief, instead of getting ripped off by a cheap unit or an inexpensive air clean with faulty claims.
