Industrial Particle Filtration: The Right Dust Collector System Can Save You Money

Industrial and commercial job sites, warehouses, and workshop almost always have dust and particles floating around, and none of them are good for you or employees to breathe. To combat this liability-causing toxic dust, many business owners purchase room dust collectors, source capture particle filtration units or both. Sometimes, however, not only does the dust collector fail to perform as well as expected, but the frequency of filter replacements and maintenance costs also become a problem.

One reason for these problems is the dust collector not having an adequate large particle dust filter and pre-filter system that keeps the larger particles from prematurely clogging the HEPA or other filters. For portable room dust collectors, another main issue is that many business owners do not buy enough units to cycle all of the air in a given space, or the one or two units themselves don’t have the output needed to be effective. And finally, one huge problem is that many workshop owners think they can get by with one portable dust collector, thinking it’s better than nothing.

And while having some kind of particle filtration system is usually better than nothing, it’s much more cost effective overall to have a proper dust extraction system in place that does a complete air cleaning job, keeps you compliant with OSHA regulations, reduces maintenance costs, and actually reduces the number of filter changes per year, all saving you money. The particle filtration system we’re speaking of is simply to have quality portable source capture dust collectors removing dust and particles at the source, and one or more HEPA room air filtration systems running as well.

Regardless of the size of your workshop, woodshop, or job site, having an industrial particle filtration system in place will more than pay for itself over time instead of buying one substandard unit that won’t last or handle the amount of air space and type of particles you’re dealing with, buying a proper dust & particle removal system will ensure that you pay the lowest amounts possible for healthcare costs, facility maintenance (since the dirt and dust is being removed automatically), and filter replacements, not to mention preventing OSHA fines and possible lawsuits. When you add up all of those savings, it’s pretty clear that installing the right dust collector system will definitely reduce costs and eliminate liabilities for any industrial or commercial workshop.

Again, however, all dust collectors aren’t the same, and you can’t just believe every claim made by a manufacturer. To choose the right particle extraction units for a woodshop or workshop, make sure the unit not only has a pre-filter, dust filter, and HEPA filter. Any portable dust extractor unit without all three of those filters simply will not clean the air as well, and will definitely cause you to have to pay for more filter replacements than you should. And for the room particle filtration unit, it’s best that the unit has enough output (400 CFM minimum) and that you purchase enough units to get the clean air changes per hour required by OSHA for your particular industrial or commercial application. (see OSHA.gov for regulations).

If the dust collector system doesn’t have the output or air-cycling capacity to remove the particles before employees breathe them, it’s kind of a waste of time, and your employees are still being exposed to a hazard. You want a portable dust or particle removal unit that definitely removes the pollutants before they can be inhaled. You may find that it’s more appropriate for you to use a bag filter dust remover and a HEPA unit–that’s a combination that works well, too–just make sure you have a HEPA filtration unit running to protect you and your employees from the more dangerous toxic fine dust particles.
