Woodshop Dust Collection Systems: Why HEPA & Carbon Filters are Vital to Safety

Most woodshop owners have some form of dust & particle collection system, for obvious reasons. Many shop owners, however, especially home woodshops, only have a system that collects the large particles as they are being released from saws, grinders, sanders etc—and this is dangerous for several reasons. If there is no HEPA filter, the tiny, more dangerous wood and other particles aren’t being captured so the operator breathes them whenever the machines are in operation.

If there is no carbon filter, any fumes being released when the wood is cut or finished (such as the often carcinogenic chemical wood preservatives or sealants), the operator breathes those pollutants, as well. And, the usual masks that many wood workers wear aren’t HEPA or carbon filters, so unfortunately, the tiny toxic fine dust and chemicals pass right through those, creating a safety hazard for the worker, owner, and possibly the family if the woodshop is in the home!

Regardless of whether you have a woodshop in the home or in an industrial location, having an commercial-grade particle filtration system with HEPA & carbon filters can be one of the smartest business decisions you can make to prevent illness, minimize liability, and maximize production & profits. The best way to ensure proper dust particle and chemical fume removal is to first use a source-capture unit at each sander, grinder, lathe, etc to trap pollutants as they are released, and then have one or more portable woodshop particle filtration units to remove any other particles or residues in the ambient air.

We recommend the portable particle filtration unit because it’s great for those times when you’re running processes that produces extra heavy dust & chemical pollutants—just roll the unit close to the work area for extra filtration power. In some situations where multiple machines are being used at one time, creating a high level of dust, particles and other pollutants, an HVAC based cyclone dust collection system may be best.

The cyclone dust collector uses cyclonic air flow action to remove a lot of the particles before they hit the filters, which saves you money by extending the life of your filters. And, cyclone dust collectors often have a good carbon filter built in, as well, which will help remove those harmful chemicals mentioned earlier. Which dust collector should you buy? We recommend

Electrocorp’s RSU series industrial air cleaners for source capture applications and the I-6500 Cyclone Dust Collectors as the best rated commercial woodworking dust collection systems. These systems will remove over 99% of all dust and other pollutants in your woodshop.  And in most cases, you won’t have to buy another air cleaner for your woodshop, ever, as you’ll have the best dust & particle filtration possible.

Do yourself a favor, however, and don’t buy a cheap dust filter or some kind of minimal filtration system that looks like shop vacuum. Those cheap dust collectors don’t have the air filtration power of a true industrial –grade dust extraction system. Cheap dust collectors don’t have the same filters and they won’t be able to protect you from the health problems or liability. In fact, since the cheap units often allow sub-micron particles and chemicals to pass through, the fan will actually circulate those dangerous tiny toxic pollutants more, creating more of a health hazard, not less.
