Many people buy air cleaners to help them breathe cleaner, higher quality air so that they can sleep better, have more energy and better health. Those air purifiers or filtration systems, however, are only at their best when the air filters aren’t clogged or overly full. Clogged air filters not only leave the air polluted, they also increase power consumption—and your electric bill. And if air cannot get through the filter, that polluted air gets blown around the filter by the fan, which circulates polluted air more than if the air cleaner wasn’t on, increasing allergy symptoms and more. Replacement air filters are very important wherever you need to make sure you or others are breathing clean air. Harmful dust, mold and bacterial pollutants quickly build up in homes and clean room in hospitals when the air filters aren’t replaced on a regular basis.
And what determines what ‘regular basis’ means, is usually the air cleaner or air filter manufacturer’s recommendations. However—the manufacturer’s recommendation for buying replacement air filters is a minimum number. When the air is heavily polluted, HEPA and carbon filters need to be replaced more often. How do you tell when you need to replace a HEPA or carbon filter, really? For HEPA filters, when you see greyish color on both sides of the filter, that means dirt and dust has reached the other side of the filter and it’s time to replace. For carbon or charcoal filter cartridges, it’s usually when the odors in your room aren’t going away any more, or seem to be more noticeable. That means the carbon is saturated and it’s not removing chemical or odor pollutants any more. And obviously when you notice more allergy or sinus irritation than normal, this usually means your air filters aren’t cleaning the air properly, as well.
Don’t buy cheap aftermarket replacement filters or custom ‘cut to fit’ filter material for your air cleaner, however. Cheap room purifier filters made by someone other than your air purifier manufacturer typically don’t work very well and may void the warranty, so it’s best to avoid those. Your best bet is to buy the replacement filters that are made for your air purifier by the same manufacturer. These filters are designed for your air cleaner and will do the best job of cleaning in the air in your home, room, or office.
If it’s an A/C filter, just make sure it is the correct size—obviously a replacement filter that’s too large won’t fit, but one that is too small will allow polluted air to pass through, polluting your whole home or office area. The bottom line is this: make sure you replace your air filters on schedule or a little before to make sure you’re breathing clean, healthy air. It’s one simple, inexpensive step that can make a world of difference in your health and well-being.
