UV Lights Mounted in Your HVAC or Furnace Ducts: One of the Best Ways To Get Cleaner, Odor-Free Air in Your Home

We all want to breathe cleaner air in our homes, as we know it will reduce coughing, sneezing, allergy attacks, etc. Part of our coughing, sneezing, allergy attacks, even colds and sinus infections often come from live bacteria, viruses, and mold particles floating in the air along with the dust. And while air conditioning filters are good at stopping a majority of the larger particles, even allergy-rated filters can’t stop the smaller bacteria and mold spores, and certainly not viruses because the pore size is too large. This is the bulb strength that proved successful in laboratory tests; any lower wattage will not freshen the air as well, and does not produce enough light units to kill many of the more troublesome bacteria and mold spores. Also, we recommend that you place one UV light bulb unit before the filter and coil (in the air conditioning duct bringing air into the unit) and one after the coil (in the HVAC duct pushing air out of the unit). This will give any bacteria, mold or viruses two solid exposures to the UV light for a more complete air sanitizing job.

The other thing to consider is that often the air conditioning or HVAC ducts after the unit (in the output, going to the vents in your house) are loaded with mold, dust, dirt, etc and still contaminate your indoor air to a degree. Change Air Purifier Prefilters Regularly and Save on Carbon & HEPA Filters

A lot of people buy quality air purifiers with a good filter system that includes a HEPA filter, a carbon filter, and a prefilter and become aggravated when they have to replace their HEPA and carbon filters in 6-8 months, instead of the normal 2-3 years. And they’re aggravated because quality carbon and HEPA filters aren’t cheap. Then, some people think there is something wrong, abandon the air purifier completely, etc. All of this aggravation, extra expense, or throwing out the air purifier is unnecessary. Almost always, the cause of these problems is very simple: not changing the prefilters as recommended by the manufacturer.

HEPA or carbon block prefilters are generally made of a special foam-type material and do several important things for the other filters, the air purifier, and air quality. The main function of an air cleaner prefilter is to stop larger particles before they get lodged in the HEPA or carbon filters. This is important because when larger particles clog the HEPA or carbon filters, the air doesn’t flow through those filters as it should, causing them to need replacing and causing backflow of polluted air back out of the air purifier, around the seals, which hurts air quality. Also, when your air purifier is running with clogged filters, energy usage (and your power bill) can go up quite a bit. And no, vacuuming or washing the prefilters doesn’t help—these prefilters are electrostatically charged and lose their charge with any vacuuming or washing, which means they start allowing those larger particles to get through and clog up your other filters, decreasing their life. And prefilters are fairly cheap. Austin Air or Aller Air prefilters are usually around $13-15 per change every 3 months or so, which is certainly a lot cheaper than having to replace your carbon and HEPA filters too often, and you may even extend the life of your other filters a little.

When buying air purifier prefilters, however, be sure to get the proper HEPA and carbon block prefilters from the manufacturer or your dealer. Cheap, aftermarket prefilters are often not made of the same material, don’t fit just right, do not work as well, and allow your HEPA and carbon filters to become clogged anyway, which is defeating the purpose. Yes, you can buy large prefilter-style foam filter material in some places but again, this material is often not the same and may even void your air cleaner’s warranty. Do yourself and everyone in your home a favor and buy the proper air cleaner prefilters and change them regularly. You will definitely save money, have better air quality, and reduce energy costs.

Activated Carbon Air Filters: The Key To Truly Clean Air

A lot of people think that just having a basic air purifier system is all they need to completely clean the air. And most air purifiers with HEPA filters do a pretty good job of removing dust, mold spores, and other particles from the air in our homes, offices and rooms. As good as HEPA filters are for removing particles, however, they are powerless for removing odors, chemicals, vapors, gases, etc, as the fiber in the HEPA filters does not attract or stop chemical or gas-based compounds. 

Believe it or not, odors and chemical vapors are constantly released from cleaning products, solvents, paints, carpets, and other sources in our homes and offices and for many they cause headaches, sinus irritation, allergies, asthma and more. To remove pollutants like these, you must have high-quality activated carbon or charcoal air filtration system, and preferably with filters containing granular charcoal or military grade carbon, not crushed. Many people using activated carbon air filtration systems to reduce odor and chemical sensitivities notice a return of their symptoms when the filter is ‘used up’ and think there is something wrong with the air purifier or that something else is wrong. Often this is not the case, and it is simply that the air cleaner needs a replacement carbon filter. And a lot of people deal with chronic headaches, allergies, asthma symptoms and more while in their homes, rooms, and offices and may not know that there are chemical and gaseous pollutants in the air that are causing a problem.
