Are You Breathing Mold, Arsenic, Lead, Asbestos or Other Pollutants in Your Home? Use an Air Quality Test Kit and Know For Sure

Air quality test kits have come a long way since they first became available. And if you’re not sure whether you or your family is breathing in toxic mold, arsenic, lead, fiberglass, asbestos or other pollutants, it might be a good idea to test the indoor air quality in your home…like, right now, because airborne pollutants like those listed above and others have been tied to various health issues, and they’re often found in most homes where the occupants have health problems, headaches, migraines, respiratory problems, neurological disorders, and more. And since test kits are now cheap and accurate, that’s all the more reason to get it done.

Indoor air pollution from mold, especially black mold, is particularly dangerous and has been linked to all kinds of allergy, asthma symptoms to nerve disorders, heart disease, and many other health problems. If you smell any kind of mildew or musty odors in your home, it’s better to test and be sure. Arsenic is also a big problem is many homes, one that most families don’t think about. Arsenic in homes, buildings or apartments most often comes from wood used in construction, wood that was treated with a preservative called Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) to keep lumber from rotting. CCA was widely used in home building from about 1970 to 2003 when the EPA outlawed it. CCA is classified as a known carcinogen, and can cause cancer of the lung, bladder, skin, kidney, prostate, and sinuses.

Lead in homes comes from drinking water, lead pipes, and most often, old lead paint. If you live in a home that was built before 1978 (lead paint was outlawed by the Feds in 1978), you most likely do have lead-based paint or lead paint residue and dust, even if it’s been repainted. The lead dust is the main issue causing poor indoor air quality, as this dust is what becomes airborne and inhaled. Lead poisoning is very harmful, causing everything from nervous and cardiovascular disorders, anemia, miscarriages, and many other problems. The key is finding out when your home, office building or apartment was built, and whether there has been any water damage—that can tell you a lot. And these are just a few of the pollutants found in most homes and offices.

The good news is that cheap air quality test kits are now available that will allow you to test for mold, arsenic, lead, asbestos, or any other pollutant in your home. Not all air test kits are the same, however. You will see various kits from lots of companies online and the pricing varies quite a bit. Often, the lower priced kits are not as accurate, don’t use an accredited lab for processing (important for accurate reports), processing can take too long, and they can be difficult to use. With air quality test kits, you often do get what you pay for, and having fast, accurate results can mean the difference between overcoming a health problem or continuing to suffer. And if you find that your home, building, or apartment’s indoor air is polluted, this can often be easily corrected by cleaning up (the house and yourself through cleansing) and installing an air purification system or room air purifier--and obviously a good water purifier, such Culligan or Zero Water.
