UV Lights Mounted in Your HVAC or Furnace Ducts: One of the Best Ways To Get Cleaner, Odor-Free Air in Your Home

We all want to breathe cleaner air in our homes, as we know it will reduce coughing, sneezing, allergy attacks, etc. Part of our coughing, sneezing, allergy attacks, even colds and sinus infections often come from live bacteria, viruses, and mold particles floating in the air along with the dust. And while air conditioning filters are good at stopping a majority of the larger particles, even allergy-rated filters can’t stop the smaller bacteria and mold spores, and certainly not viruses because the pore size is too large. So what’s the best way to get cleaner air in your home? Well, you need a HEPA filter, and UV (ultraviolet) light purification systems mounted in your HVAC, furnace, or air conditioning ducts.

UV lights produce harmless hydroxyl ions (not ozone) that actually destroy the membrane of the cell structure of many bacteria and mold spores, and can even destroy the structure of viruses. So the first thing to do is install a UV light air cleaner system in your furnace ducts. This will kill the bacteria, viruses, and most mold spores (if the bulbs are strong enough), so at least these microbes and viruses will be dead if any get through the furnace filter, which some will. The next step would be to install a HEPA filter (usually by way of a whole house air cleaner system but not always). The HEPA filters have a pore size that is much smaller than most air conditioning filters, so it is able to trap the bacteria, mold spores, viruses, dust mites particles, and more. Another good effect of using an ultraviolet light air purification system is that it works well to eliminate odors. Many odors generally come from organic molecules in the air—when the hydroxyl ions encounter these molecules, they can destroy their structures, as well, eliminating the compound that caused the odor.

All UV light air cleaner systems are not the same, however. It is important to make sure that the bulbs are at least 36 watts. This is the bulb strength that proved successful in laboratory tests; any lower wattage will not freshen the air as well, and does not produce enough light units to kill many of the more troublesome bacteria and mold spores. Also, we recommend that you place one UV light bulb unit before the filter and coil (in the air conditioning duct bringing air into the unit) and one after the coil (in the HVAC duct pushing air out of the unit). This will give any bacteria, mold or viruses two solid exposures to the UV light for a more complete air sanitizing job.

The other thing to consider is that often the air conditioning or HVAC ducts after the unit (in the output, going to the vents in your house) are loaded with mold, dust, dirt, etc and still contaminate your indoor air to a degree. If you’re not going to clean this duct work, then we advise that you get one or more portable air purifiers with HEPA filters to remove any remaining mold spores, dust, etc. UV light systems are very good at killing the micro-organisms that cause us problems, but they do not remove the particles from the air—for that we must use HEPA filters, and if very sensitive to colds and allergies, use room air purifiers with HEPA filters to keep the air as clean as possible.
