Wonder If Your Apartment Has Poor Air Quality? Now You Can Easily Use DIY Tests for Mold, Arsenic and Other Pollutants and Know For Sure.

It’s no secret that a lot of apartments, especially older apartments have poor air quality. What is often kept a secret, however, is when the buildings have been flooded or had leakage that led to mold growth. And even if you ask, you most likely won’t get the truth. Arsenic is another potential issue. Arsenic was used in a lot of construction before 2003 in treated wood. With regard to arsenic, you can find out when the apartments were built and if it’s before 2003, there’s a chance that arsenic vapor from the treated wood is contributing to poor air quality. And that’s not all—lots of apartments have air pollution from everything from bacteria to dust mites to fiberglass to asbestos and all kinds of things that cause problems and most of the time we are left wondering what is causing the allergies, asthma attacks or other health problems.

Instead of wondering, or waiting until you have chronic sinus or other health problems, you can simply use affordable DIY home air test kits for mold and other pollutants. These test kits will tell you with 100% accuracy whether mold, arsenic, or other pollutants are present on surfaces in your apartment. And if it’s on the surfaces, that means it’s in the air and you’re breathing it. And, you get a lab-grade report from an accredited lab—which is often admissible in court if you needed to prove something. Bottom line is this: an air quality test kit can tell you if mold or other pollutants are present, or not—which helps you determine if air quality is the problem or something else.

And it might not be mold or arsenic that is causing a problem. It could be emissions or fibers coming from carpets, fiberglass fibers from insulation (often found in air conditioning ducts), dust from sheetrock, lead from old paint, asbestos from old tiles, or even bacteria. The good news is that there are test kits for all of these and they’re fairly cheap—usually between $40 and $100, with only the organic vapor test that is around $250 (organic vapors often come from stored paints, solvents and cleaning products. Sometimes fresh paints will emit organic vapors or VOC’s, but it’s usually the solvents or cleaning products that are the issue.

It’s important, however, to use lab-grade air quality test kits—test kits that use an accredited lab for processing. Why? Because accredited labs are ‘accredited’ or certified because of consistent accuracy, quality test results, and ethical behavior. The last thing you want is contaminated results or inaccurate results, which might not only be a waste of time and money, but might impact your health with inaccurate test results. It’s also important to use the test kits exactly as directed, and test the environment ‘as is’—i.e., don’t clean before hand—you want to test the room, apartment, or area the way it normally is.

And, be aware that you might have to use a couple of air test kits to nail down what the problem pollutant is, or test other areas to see where the indoor pollutant is coming from. A couple of great things about air quality test kits from Building Health Check, LLC is that they have an accredited lab, and they are approved and used by many individuals, city and state municipalities, FEMA and other U.S. Government agencies. There are a lot of ‘cheap’ air quality test kits out there but don’t be fooled and take dangerous chances with inaccuracies or spend more money retesting to be sure—we recommend Building Health Check, LLC because you can test once and most often, you’re done.
