Ultraviolet Light Air Cleaners: Do They Really Clean the Air In Your Home?

A lot of people wonder if UV light air cleaning systems installed in central air conditioning ducts really work. Do they actually kill bacteria, mold, mildew, odors, filter the air, etc., or is it just a bunch of…marketing?

Well, we can tell you that HVAC mounted UV air purifiers do, in fact, work very well and do kill these types of pollutants often found in home & office HVAC ducts—but it’s best that the bulbs are at least 36 watts and that the unit has two lamps, if possible. Why 36 watts per bulb? That’s because 36 watt bulbs are the strength used in laboratory tests where ultraviolet was found effective for killing mold, bacteria, algae and a lot of other organisms. And 36 watts gives you about 24,000 light units per bulb which is above the amount of UV light units required to kill mold and a good list of other organisms. All it takes is a few seconds of exposure to high-power ultraviolet light and the DNA & cell structure of these ‘germs’ is destroyed.

Despite many UV air purifier and UV air cleaner manufacturer claims, studies show that the purification systems with bulbs at less than 36 watt strength often won’t have enough light units to kill mold and the most dangerous germs and may let them pass through, into your home’s indoor air….alive, where they can harm you or your family. If you buy one of the best HVAC UV air cleaner system with two 36-watt bulbs, however, you’ll have more than enough light units to kill pretty much every type of mold, bacteria, viruses, algae, etc, that are commonly found in homes—and offices. Just be sure to place the UV air cleaner in the air conditioning duct work after the coil since many organisms breed and grow on the coil’s wet surface and you want the ultraviolet light to have a chance to kill anything being blown off the coil—before it goes out into your home.

Also, if you can afford it, we recommend mounting a two-bulb ultraviolet light air purifier system in both the duct work before the coil and after the coil for extra air sanitizing power. That gives the germs two solid exposures to UV light, and helps keep air conditioner filters cleaner for a longer period of time, too.

Speaking of blowing out air into your home, keep in mind that UV air cleaners are not filters—i.e., they do not trap particles, dust, mold, etc. If you want the best air cleaning performance from your UV air cleaner system, we highly recommend that you install vent filters at each of the floor, wall or ceiling registers or vents in your home or office. Why? That’s because the UV light do kill the organisms, yes, but in many cases, even the dead mold spores, bacteria, etc., are still blowing out of the vents and even the dead particles, dust, mold, etc., can still cause a significant allergy or asthma reaction for a lot of people once inhaled. A good set of vent filters is cheap, available at Walmart, Lowe’s, or Home Depot, and can prevent most dead pollutants from blowing out of the vent.

Bottom line: if you choose a UV air cleaner system to disinfect the air in your home, be sure to install vent filters as well to make sure that the dead allergens, mold, bacteria, etc aren’t blowing out of the vents. And don’t buy cheap UV air cleaners—they often don’t last, have lower powered bulbs, and many times have metal brackets that rust out. Buy the UV air purification systems with ABS plastic, nylon, or fiberglass duct mounting brackets as these cannot rust. And get a system for your office or tell your boss about it—the healthy negative ions produced by UV light can actually increase productivity, help prevent fatigue, and keep everyone well and working!
