It’s pretty well known that industrial and commercial manufacturing processes that involve welding, soldering, plastics, etc release harmful fumes that must be removed. It’s important to realize that when carbon becomes saturated with the chemicals, fumes, vapors, & gases that it’s designed to collect/remove, the carbon stops absorbing these pollutants and allows them to pass right through the filter. And when the carbon is completely saturated, the air passes through with virtually no filtration—and now the fumes are being blown out more than they would if there was no fan circulating the air—which can make for even higher health hazards than you would have without the unit. Not good.

 

So find out what pollutants or fumes are going to be extracted and in what concentrations, and check with the manufacturer to see how long that filter should last given those concentrations/level of use. 2) make sure the unit has a good pre-filter and change it often to maximize the life of the carbon filter. 3) when in doubt, get the larger capacity portable fume extractor with more carbon—more carbon means the unit will handle larger spaces and the filter should last longer, with fewer replacement filter purchases. 4) determine if there are fine dust particles along with fumes that need to be removed—if so, buy a cyclone or other full-service unit with carbon and HEPA filters to remove particles and fumes at the same time, instead of buying two separate units.
