Commercial Air Cleaners: Why It Pays To Have One, Even If You Don’t Think You Need It

For some businesses where pollutants are being produced and released into indoor air by welding, grinding, sanding, wood working, etc, it’s obvious and makes sense to have some kind of filtration system to make sure that harmful dust, fumes, and other pollutants are being removed, to help ensure good health for you and your employees. For other businesses that only maintain an office or a warehouse and only have a few employees, you might think that you really don’t need a portable or HVAC-based industrial air cleaner or air scrubber unit. In fact, you might think that your indoor air quality is well under control.

And you might be mostly right about that. But for the pollutants that are there (and studies show that all buildings, homes, offices, rooms, etc have some degree of indoor air pollution), you don’t want them causing health issues for you or your employees over time—and over time, without a quality air filtration system in place, they can. Offices, rooms, and warehouses all have varying degrees of dirt and dust that remains, and gets released from walls, furniture, ceilings, etc any time air blows across it.

Also, it’s been shown that fumes from cleaning products, solvents, paints, carpets, copiers, etc., are also present in most offices, rooms, and buildings. And yes, the HVAC system (if you have one) does bring in fresh air. The issue is that the fresh air does not completely get rid of the pollutants—it only dilutes them some, stirs them up, and what does escape, is replaced by new pollutants as they are constantly being released. And over time, the indoor air inside your office, shop, or other work site can become quite contaminated with all of the dust, fumes, and other pollutants.

And dust is not just dust or extra fine dirt—it usually contains about 200 dust mites per gram of dusts, plus mold spores, pollen, bacteria, viruses, and more. And guess what—without a portable commercial air purifier removing that dust (and all the other allergy & illness causing pollutants), you and your employees are breathing it every day.

Dust and fume or chemical vapor-based indoor pollutants have been identified as probable causes of over 75% of colds, flu, allergies, asthma, and other respiratory conditions. And any of these illnesses can mean loss of productivity for your business. Sick employees or those that just don’t feel ‘up to par’ produce less, and can end up creating negative press for your business when they don’t handle customers as politely as they should. And all it takes is one grumpy employee to make a complaint and you’ll be hearing from OSHA—and likely for a long time.

Which commercial air cleaner or air scrubber should you buy? It depends on what purpose the air purifier is going to be used for. For rooms and offices where concentrated fumes & dust aren’t present, one or more quality portable air cleaners similar to the ones you use at home, can do a great job, provided that they have a strong air filtration system that includes pre-filters, activated carbon filters, and a medical-grade HEPA filter. For industrial or commercial work sites, buildings, or warehouses where higher levels of chemical and dust or particle based pollutants are present, you want an industrial air filtration system or air purifier with extra amounts of the right type of activated carbon (carbon or charcoal that has been ‘tuned’ to absorb the pollutants present in your situation), plus a large enough HEPA filter to do the job, as well.

And you want to make sure that whatever commercial-grade air cleaner you buy can handle the amount of air space in the building, warehouse or room where air purification or air quality control is needed. Most OSHA requirements stipulate a certain number of clean air changes per hour, usually around 4-6, so make sure the air cleaner’s output or CFM can give you that—or purchase the 2-3 units or whatever is needed to give you those air changes & adequate pollution removal.

And by the way, you don’t just want an air sanitizer system that uses ions or a solution of some kind to kill microbial pollutants. Whatever industrial air cleaner you buy, make sure it has the high quality filters mentioned above. You want a ‘pollutant removal system’, not just something that kills bacteria, mold, etc. If it does both, that’s great, but the filters are a must. The bottom line is that even if you don’t think you need an air cleaner for your industrial or commercial business, it can help productivity, and prevent a lot of problems. And, installing a commercial-grade air filtration system can help indicate that you weren’t negligent, should any one file a claim or suit against you—sort of like a secondary type of insurance.
