Why the Best Air Purifiers for Pets Aren’t Sold in Major Stores

Ever wondered why the best pet air purifiers or only seem to be found at online air purifier stores, not at PetSmart, Petco, Walmart, or their websites, etc? There are several reasons, but one of the main reasons is the quality features and air cleaning power required to make an air purifier that is effective for use with pets increases the cost of production and that doesn’t leave as much room for profit as these big stores would like to have, i.e. the manufacturer can’t sell it to them as cheap as they want so the big stores don’t buy it.

Companies like Hunter, Germ Guardian, Homedic, etc sell very cheaply made air purifiers to these stores at very low cost, so the store can make a big profit—but comparing them to something like an Austin Pet Machine is like comparing an electric smart car to a Ford Mustang. Sure, the Austin Pet Machine costs more, but it cleans the air and removes urine & other odors and dander about 500 times better. And that’s because it has better quality filters that make it a better pet hair air purifier--HEPA filters remove the cat, dog, bird or other animal dander, hair, bacteria, bird dust, dust mites, etc and 15 pounds of carbon  & zeolite that removes odors like a champ. Compare that to the thin filters in cheap department store air cleaners--big difference.

People that buy the low cost ‘pet odor air cleaners’ usually find that they do not remove odors very well at all, and their allergies are still just about as bad as before —and that’s because the cheap pet air cleaner is only doing a partial job of removing the airborne pet dander, dust, & odors from your room and circulating the rest of the pollutants. These low cost air purifiers usually have a low output, as well, which means that it takes 15-45 minutes to clean all of the air in a room—which means that you’re going to breathe a lot of the dander before the air cleaner can get to it.

A couple of the best air cleaners for pets, such as the Austin Pet Machine or the Aller Air 4000 Vocarb both have an output of 400 cubic feet per minute—which means it removes over 99% of the pet dander & odors in an average room in every 2 minutes. Big difference.

And usually, the low cost air purifier sold at pet stores usually doesn’t last, which means you’ll have to replace it in 6-12 months. After a couple of replacements, you’ve spent about as much as you would have on a quality HEPA pet air cleaner that would last for many more years and do a far better job of removing the dander & odors that cause the majority of allergies, asthma, and respiratory issues. And if you’re looking to clean the air to help your pet with any allergies or respiratory problems they have, a quality air purifier for cat dander & odor, for example, will make a difference; the low cost air purifier from Petco or Walmart probably won’t.

And by the way, you don’t want most of the electronic air cleaners with no HEPA filter, such as Oreck, etc—they don’t work as well, make more noise, and have been shown to create ozone, which is bad for you and your pet. The only electronic air cleaner with HEPA performance and no ozone is the Stadler Form Viktor, fyi.
