Waste Water Treatment Plants: Fume Extractors Are a Must

Waste water treatment plants use a number of chemicals and other methods to kill micro-organisms in water. And every time these methods are applied, there are always residues from these chemicals and other pollutants like methane & VOC’s that become airborne–not to mention the odors! And without a proper industrial fume & gas extractor or air filtration system running, that creates a continuous health hazard and unpleasant working conditions for those who work there.

And many times, it’s not just chemicals that become airborne. Waste water has bacteria & viruses in it, and these pollutants can become airborne, too—something that none of us need or want to breathe. And a lot of business owners think that if they just have adequate ventilation or a basic air cleaner system, that this will take care of the problem. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

To remove the hazards of chemical fumes, vapors, gases, and bacteria & viruses, you have to have an effective system designed to remove these pollutants at a rate of 99% or better. And, in most cases, OSHA regulations require that you have 10-12 cleanair changes or more per hour in places like waste water treatment plants. To get that rate or kind of air cleaning, you must have several fume & gas collectors running at a minimum of 800-1000 CFM. You can’t just vent to the outside or you’ll be in violation of EPA regulations. There’s just no way around it—if you run a waste water treatment plant, you’re going to have to filter the air properly—or deal with a lot of employee issues, higher insurance rates, health care costs, and probably OSHA fines.

For most waste water treatment plant applications, we recommend Electrocorp’s best RSU 48 CC portable commercial fume extractor, with 120 lbs of industrial strength Vocarb carbon, micro-HEPA filter that removes 99% of particles down to 0.1 microns, and a good pre-filter to protect the other filters. At its medium output setting (1000 CFM, which allows for best filtration performance), roughly 10 of these units would properly capture over 99% of all fumes, gases, vapors, & particles, and give most waste water treatment plant areas anywhere from 10-15 complete air changes per hour.

And, the RSU 48 portable fume collector is very portable, and can be rolled around to wherever air filtration is needed most via heavy industrial casters on the bottom. Add a 10 year warranty, and you’ve got a winner.  Electrocorp also has industrial VOC gas & vapor collection systems, such as the Air Rhino VS Carbon fume collection unit, which can be hung from the ceiling if floor space needs to be preserved.

Don’t be fooled by cheaper, lower-quality air filtration systems that say they can capture & remove all the fumes, odors, gases, vapors, & particles–but don’t have at least 60-100 lbs of commercial grade activated carbon, a HEPA filter, and a pre-filter. If they don’t have at least those filters and an output of 600-800 CFM (at a minimum), their claims are not true and you’ll be wasting your money.
