HEPA & Carbon Air Purifier Pre-Filters: Why It’s Important to Use Them…And Replace Them Regularly

Many of the best air purifiers have pre-filters in their filtrations system, which is important because prefilters stop the large particles from clogging up HEPA and carbon block filters prematurely—and causing frequent, expensive HEPA and carbon filter changes. But there’s something other than the expense of the extra filter replacements that we need to be concerned about: improper air filtration.

Often, home owners purchase an air purifier that doesn’t have a prefilter and this can be bad for several reasons: 1) obviously, the HEPA and carbon filters are going to get clogged quickly without one, causing you to have to replace them, but 2) the bigger issue is that when the HEPA and carbon filters clog up quickly, polluted air begins to go around the filter because it cannot get through the filter, which causes polluted air to be blown around even more that it would without an air purifier because it has a fan behind it. Does that make sense?

When you have an increase in circulation of polluted air, you almost always have an increase in allergy, asthma or other respiratory symptoms. If the air purifier does have a pre-filter and you don’t change them every three months or so, the same thing begins to happen: the prefilter can clog up to a point that air begins to backflow and go around the filter, creating the same hazardous poor indoor air quality situation. Now, dust, dirt, mold spores, and more that would have likely remained on the floor is now being sucked up by the air purifier and being blown around and inhaled. Not good.

So, here are a couple of notes regarding air purifier pre-filters: 1) if you have an air purifier that does not have a pre-filter, either get an air cleaner that does have one or purchased some electrostatic cut-to-fit pre-filter material from your local department store and place in front of the HEPA & carbon filters, 2) if your air purifier does have pre-filters, be sure to replace them at least every 3 months to maximize the life of your HEPA and carbon filters, and ensure proper indoor air quality. And, if possible, be sure to buy replacement HEPA and carbon prefilters from the air cleaner manufacturer or authorized dealer if you can to ensure proper fit. The last thing you want is air going around the pre-filter and again, clogging the HEPA and carbon filters prematurely.
