How Good Is Your Indoor Air Quality? Know for Sure with a Dylos Air Quality Monitor

A lot of people use air filters, air purifiers, and other appliances in an effort to clean up their home’s indoor air. But often people still have some measure of allergies, asthma, or other health problems after installing air purification or air filtration systems. If this sounds like you, you may still have air pollution. And often, the offending type of air pollution is particle-based—dust, dust mite particles, mold, pollen, etc. So how do can you know for sure whether your air purifiers or filtration system is doing its job, or if it’s even enough to effectively clean the air in your home? The answer is simple: use a Dylos laser particle counter or air quality monitor.

Laser particle counters used to be (and some still are) very expensive, but now they are an affordable way to measure how many particles are floating around in your indoor air, contributing to poor air quality, allergies, asthma, and more. Dylos is a company that makes a DC1100 series air quality monitor that is easy to use and around $250. In just a few seconds, a Dylos air monitor will tell you exactly how many particles are floating around—and you can test different areas of your home or office to see if the counts are higher in one place or another, possibly determining the source of the air pollution. If you have severe allergies, you can use a laser particle counter to test any area before you spend any time there—or have someone else test the area for you. Did someone claim to professionally clean your air conditioner ducts? Test and see! You can test the ambient air coming out of the vents like a pro and find out. You can even test vacuum cleaners to see if they are doing a good job or blowing dust around in your home. An air quality monitor can even make sure that a room is clear and clean before letting your newborn baby sleep there. You can even test to see if a commercial dust collector is doing its job or not. There are tons of great uses for Dylos laser particle counters, and they are a simple, affordable way to know for sure about your indoor air quality.

A few considerations when buying air quality monitors, however: First, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on high-end pro air monitors—often the only difference is that they are battery operated and in most cases or areas you would test the air, you have an outlet where you can plug in a unit with a power supply, like those from Dylos. Except in very few instances where you must have total portability, it’s just not worth paying 5-15 times as much just for the unit to be battery operated / totally portable. Second, make sure the unit’s specifications match what you are using it for—i.e., if you’re testing an air purifier, Dylos has a specific DC1100 model that is shielded to prevent false readings, etc. Don’t forget that you can rent out an air quality monitor and actually make money doing that–in this case, the air monitor not only pays for itself, but you can actually make money. Smart.

Better Skin Tone, Natural Wrinkle Repair With a Humidifier? Yes, You Can!

We all want to look younger, have better skin tone, fewer wrinkles, etc. And many of us spend a lot of money on creams, serums, even surgical procedures to correct or improve the look and feel of our faces, throats, eyes, and other areas. But did you know that just by keeping the skin better hydrated with an inexpensive humidifier can not only reduce the appearance of wrinkles in 24-48 hours, but actually cause wrinkles to repair, and begin to go away—right in your own home?

More and more articles are popping up about using a humidifier for natural wrinkle repair, better skin tone, etc. Just check sites like Ehow.com, GAIAM.com, Yahoo.com, etc., and you’ll see that using a humidifier is fast becoming one of the best, inexpensive ways to improve (and even eliminate) wrinkles and dry skin in general. Why? Simply put, it the skin has more water in it, it the cells will naturally ‘plump up’ and begin to fill in those lines, crow’s feet, etc. Why pay all that money for botox with all it’s inherent dangers, scar tissue, and potentially undesired results when water can and often will do the same thing? Does drinking water help ‘humidify’ your body, as well? Yes, it does, and when you combine increased water consumption with a humidifier you can really see some dramatically positive results—quickly.

Some even find that using a humidifier has helped reduce (even eliminate) eczema and skin allergies, too. The issue with dry skin is that when there’s not enough water around, dirt, bacteria, and other pollutants don’t have anywhere to go, no good flow of water to help them get flushed out of the skin, so those pollutants stay right there in the skin causing irritation and breakdown of tissue, which makes wrinkle lines go even deeper. Make sense? Combine the use of a humidifier with increased water consumption, plus good skin repair nutrients like alpha-hydroxy oils, collagen, keratin, etc., and you’re going to get better results than someone not using a humidifier, and a lot faster.

The good news is that much of this is reversible, even for deep set wrinkles, by using a humidifier. The best humidifiers we’ve found seem to all be ultrasonic cool mist humidifiers, and there are several advantages for using this type of humidifier over a warm-mist humidifier or evaporative humidifier. The ultrasonic humidifier uses high-frequency vibration to vaporize the water into very tiny droplets that easily mix with the air without ‘wetting’ everything down. And they use far less energy than a warm mist humidifier that uses a heating element to basically boil the water into steam. And, since an ultrasonic cool mist humidifier does not use a heating element, there’s zero chance of a fire or melted humidifier, which does happen with warm mist humidifiers sometimes. As long as you use distilled or purified water, you won’t even have any spots or residues anywhere. If that wasn’t enough, these ultrasonic humidifiers are often very low cost, and portable so you can take them with you when you travel, and maintain that good skin hydration and natural wrinkle repair wherever you go.

At Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, we currently only sell the best ultrasonic cool mist humidifiers and waterless vaporizers, but we will soon be offering several other types of humidifiers for homes, rooms, offices and industrial use, to include evaporative and warm mist types, all of which will be filter-less or filter-free. And since we are an online store, we don’t have the overhead of traditional stores and we pass those savings on to you with cheap discount prices and free shipping every day. What? Replacement Air Filters Can SAVE Me Money?

A lot of people look at replacement air filters as an extra expense, but if you understand a few more of the details, you will see that replacing your air filters on a regular basis is actually one the best ways to save time and money in several areas:

Increased air pollution from clogged filters: When the filter in the air conditioning system or a room air purifier, becomes clogged, it not only stops removing pollutants, but because of backflow (air going around the filter and backwards because it cannot get through the filter), this actually increases air pollution, may make allergies worse and increase time and expense for cleaning, cleaning products, and allergy medications. Replacing your air filters as recommended by the manufacturer prevents the filter from clogging up and saves you time and money, with less cleaning, fewer cleaning product purchases, and less allergy medication.

Higher Home Energy Costs: A clogged air filter makes the air purifier or HVAC system work harder to push the air the filter, resulting in higher energy usage, up to 50 to 100% higher. Replacing air filters ensures proper air flow, cleaner air, and keeps home energy costs to a minimum.

Decreased Filter Life: Not replacing your prefilters on a regular basis (minimum of every 3 months) allows larger particles to stop up the HEPA and carbon filters and can reduce filter life by up to 75%. Replacing prefilters can easily give you the full or extended life for your air purifier filters and prevent having to buy 2-3 sets of filters during the time that one properly replaced set of air filters would have worked. Regularly replacing prefilters alone is one of the easiest, best ways to save hundreds of dollars per year on filters.

Increased Medical Costs: Keeping your air filters working at optimum efficiency keeps indoor air pollution to a minimum, which means you and your family won’t be breathing mold spores, dust, pollen, bacteria, viruses, etc., which can all result in more colds, flu, and trips to the doctor—and all the extra time and expense associated with those problems. Replacing your air filters also gives you the peace of mind knowing that you’ll spend more time breathing clean air, enjoying the things you love most, and less time being sick.

At Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, you can buy replacement air filters online for some of the best air purifiers on the market, from manufacturers like Aller Air, Austin Air, Blueair, Tiger, Winix, and Electrocorp, (industrial air filtration systems). And since we, too, are an online store, we don’t have the overhead of traditional stores so we pass those savings on to you with cheap discount prices and free shipping every day. Are You Breathing Mold, Arsenic, Lead, Asbestos or Other Pollutants in Your Home? Use an Air Quality Test Kit and Know For Sure

Air quality test kits have come a long way since they first became available. And if you’re not sure whether you or your family is breathing in toxic mold, arsenic, lead, fiberglass, asbestos or other pollutants, it might be a good idea to test the indoor air quality in your home…like, right now, because airborne pollutants like those listed above and others have been tied to various health issues, and they’re often found in most homes where the occupants have health problems, headaches, migraines, respiratory problems, neurological disorders, and more. And since test kits are now cheap and accurate, that’s all the more reason to get it done.

Indoor air pollution from mold, especially black mold, is particularly dangerous and has been linked to all kinds of allergy, asthma symptoms to nerve disorders, heart disease, and many other health problems. If you smell any kind of mildew or musty odors in your home, it’s better to test and be sure. Arsenic is also a big problem is many homes, one that most families don’t think about. Arsenic in homes, buildings or apartments most often comes from wood used in construction, wood that was treated with a preservative called Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) to keep lumber from rotting. CCA was widely used in home building from about 1970 to 2003 when the EPA outlawed it. CCA is classified as a known carcinogen, and can cause cancer of the lung, bladder, skin, kidney, prostate, and sinuses.

Lead in homes comes from drinking water, lead pipes, and most often, old lead paint. If you live in a home that was built before 1978 (lead paint was outlawed by the Feds in 1978), you most likely do have lead-based paint or lead paint residue and dust, even if it’s been repainted. The lead dust is the main issue causing poor indoor air quality, as this dust is what becomes airborne and inhaled. Lead poisoning is very harmful, causing everything from nervous and cardiovascular disorders, anemia, miscarriages, and many other problems. The key is finding out when your home, office building or apartment was built, and whether there has been any water damage—that can tell you a lot. And these are just a few of the pollutants found in most homes and offices.

The good news is that cheap air quality test kits are now available that will allow you to test for mold, arsenic, lead, asbestos, or any other pollutant in your home. Not all air test kits are the same, however. You will see various kits from lots of companies online and the pricing varies quite a bit. Often, the lower priced kits are not as accurate, don’t use an accredited lab for processing (important for accurate reports), processing can take too long, and they can be difficult to use. With air quality test kits, you often do get what you pay for, and having fast, accurate results can mean the difference between overcoming a health problem or continuing to suffer. And if you find that your home, building, or apartment’s indoor air is polluted, this can often be easily corrected by cleaning up (the house and yourself through cleansing) and installing an air purification system or room air purifier--and obviously a good water purifier, such Culligan or Zero Water.

Air Purifies and Cleaners.com, we sell only BHC, LLC air quality test kits, because they are easy to use, offer fast, accurate results from an accredited lab, and they are affordable. If you have a particular indoor air quality concern, don’t see the air test kit for it or don’t know how to test for something, let us know. Chances are, we have the test kit you need. And we have indoor air quality experts to standing by to help—give us a call toll-free at 1-800-701-2513 with any questions!

Dylos Portable Laser Particle Counters: An Easy Way to Test and Monitor Your Home’s Indoor Air Quality

Does your home have good indoor air quality? Are your air purifiers or air filters doing their jobs? If you or family members are still having allergy or sinus symptoms while in your home or you’re not sleeping well, there’s a chance your air isn’t as clean as you think.

Airborne particles from household dust, dust mites, mold spores, pollen, etc., are the number one cause of allergy and other respiratory issues, and play a significant role in poor sleep. The reason for this is simple: airborne particles cause irritation in the airway resulting in allergy and respiratory issues, and sleep interruptions. And if you’re using an air purifier or other filtration system in your home and still having issues, you may still have indoor air pollution.

One easy way to test the ambient air in your home and monitor indoor air pollution like a pro, is to use a Dylos DC 1100 series portable laser particle counter. Dylos air monitors are easy to use handheld units that can accurately and affordably tell you how many particles are floating around in any given area, and give you some clear information that will help you determine if you have indoor air pollution, whether air purifiers are doing their jobs, and more. They can even help you detect the source of pollution by simply testing different areas of your home, different rooms, vents, around doors, windows, etc. If you see an increase in particle counts, you know you have a source of air pollution in that area.

Dylos even has a DC 1100 model designed for testing air purifiers that will quickly tell you if that air cleaner is worth having or not! Test the ambient air in a baby’s room to make sure it’s particle-free. Some people even use air monitors to test the air before doing painting or refinishing projects to prevent a ruined paint job, etc. People with allergies or asthma can now test the air in any room or even outside areas before spending any time there. Facility management professionals use Dylos air monitors to test air quality in the buildings they are responsible for. There are so many uses for portable laser particle counters and more people are using them to test and monitor air quality.

A couple of notes about using Dylos laser particle counters: Chemicals and gases from cleaning products, paints and other sources cause a lot of sinus, allergy, symptoms, even headaches. Air monitors, however, only detect particles and they will not tell you if there are chemical vapors in the air. So, if you’re seeing very low or near zero particle counts but still having allergy or asthma symptoms, you may need to do further testing for airborne chemicals and gases using an air test kit.

Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com is an authorized distributor of Dylos DC 1100 Series air monitors. And since we are an online store, we don’t have the overhead of traditional stores so we pass those savings on to you, with low prices and free shipping. Change Air Purifier Prefilters Regularly and Save on Carbon & HEPA Filters

A lot of people buy quality air purifiers with a good filter system that includes a HEPA filter, a carbon filter, and a prefilter and become aggravated when they have to replace their HEPA and carbon filters in 6-8 months, instead of the normal 2-3 years. And they’re aggravated because quality carbon and HEPA filters aren’t cheap. Then, some people think there is something wrong, abandon the air purifier completely, etc. All of this aggravation, extra expense, or throwing out the air purifier is unnecessary. Almost always, the cause of these problems is very simple: not changing the prefilters as recommended by the manufacturer.

HEPA or carbon block prefilters are generally made of a special foam-type material and do several important things for the other filters, the air purifier, and air quality. The main function of an air cleaner prefilter is to stop larger particles before they get lodged in the HEPA or carbon filters. This is important because when larger particles clog the HEPA or carbon filters, the air doesn’t flow through those filters as it should, causing them to need replacing and causing backflow of polluted air back out of the air purifier, around the seals, which hurts air quality. Also, when your air purifier is running with clogged filters, energy usage (and your power bill) can go up quite a bit. And, since airflow through the HEPA and carbon filters is hampered, the backflow of polluted air (air not going through the air cleaner but around it) actually causes us to breathe more polluted air, increases allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues.

The simple solution is to buy a pack of air purifier pre filters usually offered by your air purifier dealer and make sure to properly change them at least every 3 months or every 1.5-2.5 months if you’re in a smoky or heavily polluted environment. And no, vacuuming or washing the prefilters doesn’t help—these prefilters are electrostatically charged and lose their charge with any vacuuming or washing, which means they start allowing those larger particles to get through and clog up your other filters, decreasing their life. And prefilters are fairly cheap. Austin Air or Aller Air prefilters are usually around $13-15 per change every 3 months or so, which is certainly a lot cheaper than having to replace your carbon and HEPA filters too often, and you may even extend the life of your other filters a little.

When buying air purifier prefilters, however, be sure to get the proper HEPA and carbon block prefilters from the manufacturer or your dealer. Cheap, aftermarket prefilters are often not made of the same material, don’t fit just right, do not work as well, and allow your HEPA and carbon filters to become clogged anyway, which is defeating the purpose. Yes, you can buy large prefilter-style foam filter material in some places but again, this material is often not the same and may even void your air cleaner’s warranty. Do yourself and everyone in your home a favor and buy the proper air cleaner prefilters and change them regularly. You will definitely save money, have better air quality, and reduce energy costs.

At Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, we sell the proper HEPA and carbon block air purifier prefilters for several of the best brands, such as Aller Air, Austin Air, and others. And since we are an online store and don’t have the overhead of traditional stores, we pass those savings on to you with cheap discount prices and free shipping every day. Activated Carbon Air Filters: The Key To Truly Clean Air

A lot of people think that just having a basic air purifier system is all they need to completely clean the air. And most air purifiers with HEPA filters do a pretty good job of removing dust, mold spores, and other particles from the air in our homes, offices and rooms. As good as HEPA filters are for removing particles, however, they are powerless for removing odors, chemicals, vapors, gases, etc, as the fiber in the HEPA filters does not attract or stop chemical or gas-based compounds.

Believe it or not, odors and chemical vapors are constantly released from cleaning products, solvents, paints, carpets, and other sources in our homes and offices and for many they cause headaches, sinus irritation, allergies, asthma and more. To remove pollutants like these, you must have high-quality activated carbon or charcoal air filtration system, and preferably with filters containing granular charcoal or military grade carbon, not crushed. Crushed carbon is often found in cheap carbon filters, does not work very well, and is basically a waste of money.

To be most effective, the carbon needs to be activated. Carbon is usually activated by adding chemicals that cause the carbon to be attracted to the chemical or gaseous compounds floating in the air. When air passes through the carbon, the chemicals stick to the carbon, leaving only clean air coming out of the filter. The best activated carbon air filters use granular carbon, which consists of tiny round granules that have much more surface area than crushed carbon—which means they will absorbs several times more pollutants.

Military grade carbon is a very strong type of carbon that is used in military gas masks to stop chemical agents, and some air purifier filters feature this type of carbon. The activated carbon in these filters does become saturated with chemicals or fill up over time, however, and must be changed if you want to continue to breathe clean, odor and chemical free air. You may not think there are enough vapors to matter, but over 80% of the time, there are sufficient amounts present in homes and offices with unfiltered air.

Many people using activated carbon air filtration systems to reduce odor and chemical sensitivities notice a return of their symptoms when the filter is ‘used up’ and think there is something wrong with the air purifier or that something else is wrong. Often this is not the case, and it is simply that the air cleaner needs a replacement carbon filter. And a lot of people deal with chronic headaches, allergies, asthma symptoms and more while in their homes, rooms, and offices and may not know that there are chemical and gaseous pollutants in the air that are causing a problem.

If you have some symptoms like this and can’t really put your finger on it, but those symptoms seem to be worse or more frequent when spending time indoors, it may be worth your while to try a quality air purifier with a good amount of activated carbon in the filters, such as those from Aller Air or Austin Air. These air purifiers have filters with anywhere from 12 to 36 pounds or more of activated carbon in them, and they do a great job of removing chemicals and odors from the air—so well that they are often recommended by health professionals.

The main point, however, is to make sure to use a sufficient amount of quality activated granular carbon if you want chemical and odor free air and make sure to change the filters as recommended by the manufacturer, or when you begin to notice that odors or symptoms seem to have returned.

At Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, we sell the best replacement carbon filters for both home and industrial and commercial air filtration—for all the best brands like Aller Air, Austin Air, Blueair, Electrocorp, Tiger, Winix. And since we are an online store and don’t have the overhead of traditional stores, we pass those savings on to you with cheap discount prices and free shipping every day.
