Change Air Purifier Prefilters Regularly and Save on Carbon & HEPA Filters

A lot of people buy quality air purifiers with a good filter system that includes a HEPA filter, a carbon filter, and a prefilter and become aggravated when they have to replace their HEPA and carbon filters in 6-8 months, instead of the normal 2-3 years. And they’re aggravated because quality carbon and HEPA filters aren’t cheap. Then, some people think there is something wrong, abandon the air purifier completely, etc. All of this aggravation, extra expense, or throwing out the air purifier is unnecessary. Almost always, the cause of these problems is very simple: not changing the prefilters as recommended by the manufacturer.

HEPA or carbon block prefilters are generally made of a special foam-type material and do several important things for the other filters, the air purifier, and air quality. The main function of an air cleaner prefilter is to stop larger particles before they get lodged in the HEPA or carbon filters. This is important because when larger particles clog the HEPA or carbon filters, the air doesn’t flow through those filters as it should, causing them to need replacing and causing backflow of polluted air back out of the air purifier, around the seals, which hurts air quality. Also, when your air purifier is running with clogged filters, energy usage (and your power bill) can go up quite a bit. And, since airflow through the HEPA and carbon filters is hampered, the backflow of polluted air (air not going through the air cleaner but around it) actually causes us to breathe more polluted air, increases allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues.

The simple solution is to buy a pack of air purifier pre filters usually offered by your air purifier dealer and make sure to properly change them at least every 3 months or every 1.5-2.5 months if you’re in a smoky or heavily polluted environment. And no, vacuuming or washing the prefilters doesn’t help—these prefilters are electrostatically charged and lose their charge with any vacuuming or washing, which means they start allowing those larger particles to get through and clog up your other filters, decreasing their life. And prefilters are fairly cheap. Austin Air or Aller Air prefilters are usually around $13-15 per change every 3 months or so, which is certainly a lot cheaper than having to replace your carbon and HEPA filters too often, and you may even extend the life of your other filters a little.

When buying air purifier prefilters, however, be sure to get the proper HEPA and carbon block prefilters from the manufacturer or your dealer. Cheap, aftermarket prefilters are often not made of the same material, don’t fit just right, do not work as well, and allow your HEPA and carbon filters to become clogged anyway, which is defeating the purpose. Yes, you can buy large prefilter-style foam filter material in some places but again, this material is often not the same and may even void your air cleaner’s warranty. Do yourself and everyone in your home a favor and buy the proper air cleaner prefilters and change them regularly. You will definitely save money, have better air quality, and reduce energy costs.

Activated Carbon Air Filters: The Key To Truly Clean Air

A lot of people think that just having a basic air purifier system is all they need to completely clean the air. And most air purifiers with HEPA filters do a pretty good job of removing dust, mold spores, and other particles from the air in our homes, offices and rooms. As good as HEPA filters are for removing particles, however, they are powerless for removing odors, chemicals, vapors, gases, etc, as the fiber in the HEPA filters does not attract or stop chemical or gas-based compounds. 

Believe it or not, odors and chemical vapors are constantly released from cleaning products, solvents, paints, carpets, and other sources in our homes and offices and for many they cause headaches, sinus irritation, allergies, asthma and more. To remove pollutants like these, you must have high-quality activated carbon or charcoal air filtration system, and preferably with filters containing granular charcoal or military grade carbon, not crushed.
