Good Residential Indoor Air Quality: There’s Lot More to Consider Than Dust or Odors

When asked what comes to mind about indoor air quality in their homes, most people think of filtering the air, removing dust, or maybe odors.  Achieving and maintaining good residential indoor air quality involves much more than removing dust and odors.  Residential indoor air quality products can include air filtration systems, humidifiers or dehumidifiers depending on the situation, and quality air conditioning systems that can maintain temperature and stay pretty clean so as not to pollute the air in your home, as most systems that aren’t cleaned regularly do. Some air quality experts even include indoor oxygen level control as an important parameter, as well, since most air conditioning systems don’t bring in outside air (unless you have a special unit that does that).

Not bringing in outside air means you very likely less than optimal amounts of oxygen in your home and more CO2 because we’re breathing it out all the time.  Not having enough oxygen and a buildup of CO2) isn’t good for health, and neither is a buildup and recirculation of chemical, dust, odor and other pollutants, which most air conditioners do for us because houses are pretty well insulated these days.  A tip for helping with the oxygen issue is to simply open a window with your air conditioner on for a couple of hours per day, assuming you don’t live in a city with heavy smog right outside your window. Proper humidity control is critical, as well. Too much humidity can lead to bacteria, mold growth and illness, and too little can aggravate allergies, asthma, crack furniture and increase dust levels in the home.  Temperature control can greatly affect your level of comfort and even degrees of inflammation you experience, if that's an issue.
