Industrial Air Filtration Systems: Preventing Illness & Liability

Industrial air quality isn’t a new subject. Most commercial and industrial business owners and management staff understand the importance of ensuring that harmful chemical fumes and particles are removed from the work place. A fair number of long standing business owners and newcomers, however, think that because they don’t currently have a problem or ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it’, that their indoor air quality isn’t an issue—and doesn’t warrant investing in an air cleaner system. Or, they think they can simply exhaust whatever pollutants are present to the outside with a big fan and everything will be just fine. Those individuals might want to think again.

As recently as June 2014, a Roanoke company Chemsolv Inc. was fined more than $600,000 by the EPA for improper storage of chemicals and other violations. The chemicals were not only creating a harmful work environment, but they were also creating a rancid sulfur smell that no doubt aggravated nearby residents, as well, and probably resulted in another complaint to the EPA. In this case, Chemsolv had been fined before, in 2011, for other violations, so the saying ‘once you’re on the EPA’s radar, you stay on it for a long time’ definitely appears to be true.

Granted, they should have been storing and disposing of chemical waste properly, but if they had a quality industrial air filtration system in place, removing the fumes, that would have definitely have created a much safer working environment for employees and might not have allowed the odors to aggravate nearby residents, which we can only guess had something to do with the EPA coming back, as it’s often complaints that cause the EPA and OSHA to make a visit. And just venting to the outside with a fan? Well, as you can imagine, that’s probably not a good solution, either.

And losing 600k in fines might not be a big deal for a big company, but for a smaller company with fewer resources, that could mean the end of the business—especially combined with all the bad press and resulting loss of revenue. And even for a larger company, it could result in enough bad sentiment to ruin the company. All of this is, of course, avoidable by 1) following the regulations set forth by the EPA and OSHA, and 2) spending that extra little bit to install the proper industrial air filtration systems, which are required for many types of businesses.

Don’t short circuit and destroy the business you’ve worked so hard to build. Do yourself, your employees, the environment, and your customers a favor by making sure that you follow these regulations and make sure the air is clean in your commercial or industrial business. The cost of proper storage and disposal of chemicals or an activated carbon air purifier is a lot less than losing your company and being saddled with debt and fines for years. Plus—it’s the right thing to do.
