Properly Using Fume Extractors: Slow and Steady is Best

If you’re using a fume extractor or considering buying one for your workshop or large industrial facility, there are several main factors to consider, one of those being the output speed in CFM or cubic feet per minute. There are a lot of different industrial fume removal systems on the market today with varying output speeds, some with a fixed speed and some with variable. And many people tend to go for the most they can get, the highest output, while not understanding that with regard to fume extraction and carbon filtration, slow and steady is actually best.

What that means is that a fume extractor draws polluted air across, through, or in between tiny granules or pieces of activated carbon and the surface of the carbon attracts the chemicals in the air and bonds to them, therefore removing them from the air. If you are pushing the air through really fast, say, 700 CFM or higher all the time, that means the air and VOC’s, smoke, chemicals, etc don’t have nearly the amount of time in contact with the carbon as it would say, if the airflow or suction rate was around 250-350 CFM. For example, if an industrial fume capturing unit is running at 350 CFM, it is giving the air twice as much time in contact with the carbon in the filter, which makes for much more effective chemical fume extractor.

This also has a lot to do with how much you get out of your filters, which are often fairly expensive—slower rate means more complete saturation of the filter so it will actually last longer so you’ll be buying activated carbon filters or bulk charcoal less often. Not to mention, everyone will be breathing much cleaner. And true, you can run a portable fume extractor unit on medium to high for a while initially to clear out a room, but you’ll want to reduce the speed to medium low to low and let the unit run continuously—including when everyone has gone home, because this will allow the fume extractor to collect any remaining chemicals or gases and leave only clean air for everyone to breathe when they come in the next morning.
