Home Humidifiers: A Missing Link for Asthma Control?

The number of people with asthma has been growing steadily for the past 30 years, and more often it’s children under five that are being affected. In many clinical studies, the causes of asthma have been pretty much narrowed to genetics, poor indoor air quality, and dry air. Genetics may not be controllable, but poor indoor air quality and dry indoor air are definitely controllable with quality portable room air purifiers and humidifiers. In many cases, a simple portable humidifier may be the missing link in controlling and preventing asthma symptoms, preventing the dry irritating air caused most often by an air conditioner or where you live, or both.

Home humidifiers often make a big difference simply because they add soothing moisture back to that dry air that dries out bronchial tissues and makes them more reactive. Usually, indoor humidity that is below about 35% is a problem for those with asthma, and many people find relief when the humidity is adjusted to around 40-45%, but not above 50%. Many portable electric humidifiers can be adjusted to achieve the exact amount of humidity necessary to relieve asthma, even allergy symptoms.

In fact, depending on how dry the air is in your home, room, or where you live, asthma symptoms have been reduced by as much as 40% for research study participants. Some room humidifiers include filters that remove minerals in the water to prevent white spots from settling on furniture and other items (top-rated ultrasonic humidifiers typically have these), and some have antibacterial silver ion technology that kills any bacteria, mold, or viruses that might be in the water (important for those with respiratory infections, COPD, etc). And there are many different room sizes for humidifiers available, as well, each able to handle large or small rooms.

Large room humidifiers can also be used in smaller rooms, and are often a better choice because if you need to humidify a whole home or living area, move to a larger room, etc, the unit can handle it without having to buy another one. It is best to stick with a top-rated electric humidifier, however. Cheap humidifiers typically break down within a year, don’t work as well, and may not have the necessary silver ion technology to kill bacteria & mold in the water (which can spread infection and make respiratory or COPD problems much worse).

Ideally, we recommend either a combination warm & cool mist ultrasonic humidifier (such as Stadler Form’s HERA) or a steam humidifier like their FRED unit. Both of these will give you clean, safe, adjustable humidity in almost any size room, up to 1000 square feet. You might also consider their Selina humidity meter - thermometer to accurately measure the humidity and temperature in your home or room. This tool will help you adjust your humidifier to exactly the amount necessary to relieve many allergy & asthma symptoms. And both of these units are good for large rooms or basements. So if you’ve been struggling with asthma and don’t know what else to do, consider a top-rated home or room humidifier (and a Selina hygrometer).  You may simply have overly dry air that is causing many of your symptoms.

If you have severe asthma, and don’t have an air purifier, consider a portable room air cleaner as well since around 60% of asthma symptoms have been found related to house dust that usually contains a large amount of dust mites.
