A lot of people have asked whether whole house air cleaners or portable air purifiers are best for maintaining clean air in your home or office. In general, whole house air cleaners attach directly to the home’s air conditioner output and filter all of the air in the house. Portable air cleaners are room air cleaners that mainly clean the air in the room that they are in, while still cleaning some of the air flowing in from other rooms, etc.
The best answer would start here: each type of air cleaner has advantages and disadvantages or rather applications and situations where one is more appropriate than the other.
Whole house air cleaners’ main advantage is that you can pretty much clean the air in an entire home with one electronic air cleaner, which is usually cheaper than buying several room air cleaners. The main disadvantage of a full home air filtration system is that it does nothing to stop particles that routinely come off the inside walls of the duct work leading to the vents, which means you get a chance to breathe some of that before it gets cycled back through.
The main advantage of room air cleaners is that they are portable, and do remove anything blowing out of the vents before you can breathe them. Disadvantages are that you need one for each of the main rooms you spend time in (which can be expensive), and you have an air cleaner sitting on the floor that may or may not get in the way.
Here’s some of the best ways we’ve found to determine which type of air cleaner is best for your situation:
For mild to moderate allergies, asthma, or respiratory issues, we recommend a whole home air purifier system, since the whole home system will keep the air about 95% free of allergens, and the few particles that get out of the vents shouldn’t upset you that much.
If you have severe allergies, MCS or severe asthma conditions, a combination of a full home air purifier and one or more room air purifiers is usually best. But if you have to choose, buy or more room air purifiers with quality HEPA and carbon filters with 4-20 pounds or more of activated carbon and keep these units in the rooms where you spend most of your time.
If you’re only spending time in your bedroom and maybe one other room in your home, a portable air cleaner might be sufficient, provided that it has a true HEPA filter and good carbon filter (not just a thin foam carbon sheet).
If you your home was recently built, with brand new ducts, has recently cleaned ducts, or if you plan to clean your ducts soon, a whole house air cleaner is probably best since there won’t be anything on the inside walls of the ducts to blow out, and you’ll get all of the air in your home cleaned with one unit.
If you travel and want clean air wherever you go, obviously a portable unit would be best—just make sure the unit isn’t heavy and bulky.
Do make sure that you buy a good quality whole house air cleaner or portable unit, however, not a cheaply made one. Cheap air cleaners (including whole home air purifiers) do not last, and typically don’t have the high quality filters to do a good job of cleaning the air, i.e. the filters aren’t held to the same standards as true HEPA or activated carbon filters. Don’t be fooled—if there’s very little carbon, it won’t do a good job of removing chemical irritants and will become saturated in about 2-3 months.
