Ultraviolet Light Air Purifiers: What They Do, Don't Do

UV light has been used for quite some time as an effective sanitizer for air, water and surfaces. This is because the light rays are able to kill a wide variety of bacteria, destroy viruses, and even disintegrate the structure of mold spore cell walls and destroy the DNA to prevent replication.

For improving air quality, UV air cleaners do much of the same thing, killing and destroying things in the air that aren't good to breathe, including disintegrating a variety of VOC and other chemical compounds. All UV air cleaners are not the same, however, and which one you choose can make a huge difference as to whether you get good air quality improvement, or not.

First, whatever UV air sanitizer you buy, make sure it has at least a 10 watt bulb in it. Anything less wattage simply isn't going to produce enough light units to do much good. Second, keep in mind that UV light doesn't trap or remove anything, it just kills or disintegrates, so be sure that your portable UV air purifier includes a quality HEPA filter and substantial (pounds) carbon filter to remove chemicals better. UV air cleaners with HEPA and carbon filters give you the best air filtration and air disinfection for the best air quality improvement.

At our online store we offer a wide variety of portable ultraviolet light air purifiers with quality HEPA and activated carbon filters to provide the cleanest air possible in your home, room or office--and all at the best discount prices with free shipping due to our extremely low overhead. Air Cleaners for Smells: What Works, What Doesn't

When trying to control odors, just grabbing any air purifier generally doesn’t work. To effectively contorl an odor, you have to determine what the odor is composed of, where it is coming from, get an idea of how much there is (such as chemical concentrations) if possible, and other factors. In general, if you buy an air cleaner for smells, make sure it has several pounds of really good quality activated carbon to start with. Adding a HEPA filter also helps, especially if part of the odor is coming from particles. Ions also help, such as negative hydroxyl ions as they tend to disintegrate odor-causing VOC’s in the air.

The other main factor to keep in mind when buying an odor control air filter is how many square feet you have and what the rating or coverage is for the air purifier. For effective odor control, make sure you will get at least 4 clean air changes per hour for your room–ask whoever you’re buying from to calculate and make sure about this. Otherwise, you may have good filters, but if it’s not moving enough air, the air cleaner won’t be able to grab the odors before you can breathe them.

Also keep in mind that thin carbon foam pre-filters don't remove odors very well. Also, air purifiers with only a HEPA filter only helps with odors maybe 10-15%, which isn't enough to really notice. For the toughest odors in homes or offices, it's best to have a lot of carbon and HEPA, or better, carbon, HEPA, and ions, such as with Blueair air cleaners. AllerAir air cleaners with their famous Vocarb carbon are best rated for cooking odors.

At our online store we offer a great selection of quality odor eliminator air purifiers with activated carbon filters, true HEPA filters, ions for effective odor control no matter what situation you have–all at the best discount prices with free shipping. We also have a team of air filtration experts on hand to help you make the perfect buying decision without overspending.

Home Smoke Air Purifiers: Get Rid of Cigar & Cigarette Smoke Effectively

When you want to remove smoke from the air in your home, it's important to realize that not just any old air purifier will do. This is because airborne smoke is composed of several bothersome elements that require different filters to adequately remove. A HEPA filter is necessary to remove the small ash and tobacco particles, a tar trapping pre-filter is needed to grab the small tar globules before they prematurely clog your HEPA or settle on walls, furniture, etc. And, you'll need a substantial carbon filter in your home smoke air purifier to be able to remove the VOC's and other odor-causing chemicals in smoke.

The best home cigar air purifiers have all of these elements, and usually have extra-heavy carbon filters due to the more concentrated amounts of VOC's, odors, etc, since cigars are like 8-12 regular cigarettes rolled into one (8-12x the pollutants released by one cigarette). Ions do help some, but they are not substitute for quality HEPA, carbon and pre-filters that actually remove the pollutants from the air.

It's also important to ensure that if you have cigar smoke or more than one cigarette smoker in the home, you're probably going to need extra air filtration (such as 2 or more portable smoke air cleaners) so that you can get a solid 4-5 complete air changes per hour. Buying only one air cleaner when you really need 2-3 will often help eliminate some of the smoke and odor, but it will cause the filters to become used up too quickly as one unit is having to work too hard to remove all the smoke. This is why it is best to consult a professional to determine how many units and what type are needed to properly remove the smoke from your home's air.

At our online store we offer a wide variety of quality cigar smoke air purifiers, with the best cigarette smoke air filters, as well as whole house smoke removal systems and more, all at the best discount prices with free shipping due to our extremely low overhead as an online store--no big building to pay for means savings for you!  Call our smoke air filtration experts today toll-free at 1-800-701-2513. Ionizer Air Purifiers: What to Look For, What to Avoid

Using ions to improve air quality has been around for quite a while. Many air purifier companies started out creating ionic air purifiers that only produced ions, no filters, and many of them released ozone as the main ion type. Ozone, although useful for other things and in various alternative medicine treatments, isn’t good to breathe.

So while the ozone ions did cause particles to become charged in a way that made many particles clump together and fall out of the air, it provided this benefit at a cost of a variety of respiratory issues, increased asthma symptoms and more. When this was realized, companies created ionizer air filters that released healthy OH- negative ions that had the positive effects of ions, but without the bad.

First of all, if you’re looking for a negative air ionizer purifier, make sure it only releases OH- or hydroxyl ions, not ozone. Some companies then added quality HEPA filters to their ionic air cleaners, which makes them much more effective at cleaning the air as particles clumped together get trapped more easily by a particle filter. Negative ion air purifiers also provide the benefit of disinfecting the air as well as dinsintegrating many VOC’s present in homes and offices.

Add a quality carbon filter to the unit that has ions and HEPA, and you’ve got a powerful air cleaner that really removes pollutants well, and doesn’t just make them fall to the ground where they can be kicked and circulated again. (Blueair is a good example of an air cleaner that offers ions, HEPA and carbon).

At our online store we offer a variety of quality portable ionizing air cleaners with HEPA and carbon filters for maximum air cleaning, all at a cheap discount prices due to our extremely low overhead as an online store. HEPA Air Cleaners for Dust Mite Allergies: One of Your Best Allergy & Asthma Solutions

It’s not widely known, but dust mites are responsible for more than 60% of new asthma cases in the U.S. Dust mite allergy is quite common and strongly contributes to a large percentage of allergy attacks in homes and offices, as well. This is for three main reasons: 1) each gram of house dust contains an average of 200 live dust mites, and 2) dust mites, dust mite body parts and dust mite feces cause an extremely strong histamine reaction in the skin and respiratory tissues, and 3) since dust easily becomes airborne, it’s easy to breathe and get this dust on our skin. So it makes sense that using a quality HEPA allergy air cleaner to remove the dust (and dust mites, body parts and feces) from the air would strongly reduce allergy and asthma symptoms.

That’s exactly right. If you buy one or more quality HEPA dust mite allergy purifiers for your home, room, office or wherever you spend time indoors and use it consistently, you can dramatically reduce allergy and asthma symptoms due to airborne, dust, dust mites, mold and other particles or fibers. You’ll need to make sure that the air cleaner is sized for the room you’re in or buy more than one unit to adequately cover the square footage for best results.

At our online store we offer one of the best selections of quality portable dust mite air filtration units with the best HEPA and charcoal filters that provide consistent relief, all at the best discount prices with free shipping due to our extremely low overhead as an online store. Removing Pet Hair & Smells: 5 Tips to Ensure Success

Having a pet in the home is something that millions of people enjoy around the world. Unfortunately, however, pets do tend to release hair, dander and smells into the home's air, often causing allergies, asthma symptoms or just unpleasant odors. There are effective ways to reduce the hair, dander and smells so you can enjoy your cat, dog, or other pet while minimizing the issues.  Here are 5 tips to quickly minimize airborne pollutants:

1)  Brush Your Pet--either have someone do it, or brush your pet yourself twice a week to get rid of excess hair that's going to fall out as they move around

2)  Vacuum Twice a Week--often good to do on the same day you do your brushing, to minimize the amount of hair gets tracked around after brushing.

3)  Consider any allergies or skin conditions your pet may have that increases scratching, which releases more hair and dander. Look for any patchings of missing or sparse hair and get with your veterinarian to determine proper treatment.

4)  Get a good quality pet dander air cleaner to remove pet hair that is in the air, tiny dander particles and pet smells (make sure the filter has substantial carbon and zeolite ideally.

5)  Keep a couple of windows cracked 5-10" during the day on one side of the home. This helps create a natural negative air situation, helping pollutants to flow out of the home. And do change those air conditioner filters regularly.

These are some of the most effective and lowest cost ways to reduce pet allergens in the home. Ask your veterinarian for additional tips, and take a look at online pet forums on the subject. At our online store, we offer a wide variety of the best portable pet smell air purifiers and those that attach to the HVAC for enhanced dander and odor control--all at the best discount prices with free shipping. Air Cleaners for Huge Rooms: Read This Before Buying

If you have a huge room where you want to improve air quality, the first thing you have to realize is the amount of air that needs to be filtered. Compared to a normal 10 x 10 x 8′ room at 800 cubic feet of air, a huge room will be more like 30 x 30 x 10′ or 9000 cubic feet of air–more than 10x the amount of air. All that extra air means that pollutants will disperse and sometimes (not always) lower concentrations, but also means to effectively clean that amount of air, you’ll need to cycle all 9000 cubic feet 4-5 times per hour to get any measurable difference in air quality. That means you’ll need, for example, an extra large HEPA purifier that has an output of 1000 to 1500 CFM, or several air cleaners with CFM’s totaling 1000-1500.

The other huge thing you need to consider with regard to choosing the right air purifier for an extra large room is what pollutants are present. If you are looking at a huge office air cleaner, for example, you have to think about whether you have mainly dust or mold concerns, or are there also chemicals present (which are usually present in offices due to copiers, building materials, carpets, cleaners, etc). If chemicals are present, be sure that large room air cleaner has a hefty carbon filter, as this is all that’s going to really be able to remove them–and let the unit run continously on low overnight to grab a little more pollutants so everyone has cleaner air when they come in the next day.

At our online store, we offer some of the very best large capacity, high volume air cleaners and big room dust purifier for almost any large area, with quality carbon and HEPA filters. Small Portable Air Purifiers: What Works, What Doesn't

When most people decide to improve the indoor air quality in a small room or office, they typically look online for a small air purifier. Of course, there are literally hundreds of small air filtration units available with a variety of outputs, methods of filtration, etc, and almost all of them claim to be ‘the best’, which simply isn’t true. Most of them will work well for a specific sizes or space, reducing pollutant levels in that space to some degree. The big difference between them, however, is how well will that small air purifier cover the space–how many air changes per hour? And, does it have the filters to remove most or virtually all of the types of pollutants present? This is why you really have to read the fine print and find out what is included, so you know whether this is the right air purifier for your needs.

Most often, the small portable office air filters or room air purifiers you find online will  feature 1) ions, 2) HEPA 3) carbon or other absorbing media for odors and chemicals, or electrostatic plates that attract particles only, or some combination of all of these. Most really small units (designed for 40-100 square feet) will include the basic HEPA filters (which are better than electrostatic because electrostatic stops grabbing particles after the plates are coated; HEPA’s continue working) and a carbon pre-filter or small carbon filter to remove chemicals and odors. This combination is usually the best because these two filters are actually removing pollutants from the air; ions can destroy some VOC’s and cause some particles to drop out of the air to the floor, but they don’t trap anything.

So when looking for say, as silent mini air purifier, make sure it has real HEPA and carbon as a base, then if it has ions as well, that’s good too, but start with HEPA and carbon and the more carbon, the better. And make sure the unit is rated for the size of your room or a little higher–if it’s under, it won’t clean the air fast enough to keep you from breathing pollutants first.

At our online store we offer a wide selection of small air purifiers to fit almost any space, with quality HEPA and carbon filters, ions and more, all at the best discount prices with free shipping. Call our experts today and get answers to your questions at 1-800-701-2513. We’re here to help!
