Most industrial and many commercial work environments have a variety of airborne pollutants floating around. To ensure safe air quality, most companies install one or more air filtration systems to remove these pollutants. What doesn’t happen sometimes, however, is regular filter changes. Like residential air cleaners, people forget, get busy or just keep putting off replacing those filters. And in a home, you can get away with it longer, for sure. In commercial or industrial settings, however, not replacing dust collector filters or fume extractor filters can lead to a quick decrease in air quality and dangerous pollutants circulating. And for many dust collectors in particular, not replacing the filter can cause the unit to overhead and become damaged. This can create an enormous amount of unnecessary liability and costs for a business.
This is why industrial air filter manufacturers usually list the recommended replacement interval on the filter box or in the literature. For particle filters, it’s pretty easy to just follow those instructions. For carbon filters used to remove chemicals, however, knowing exactly when to replace the filter can be difficult. Obviously, when the odors seem to be hanging around, the carbon filter is probably spent. For dangerous chemicals, however, you can’t use that method. Most industrial companies will use chemical detector strips and badges that change color or indicate otherwise when levels go beyond the safe zone for those chemicals, so it’s important to use those detectors in those environments. Regardless, replacing carbon filters a little ahead of time is your best bet, so that there’s as little chance of chemical exposure as possible.
