UV Ultraviolet Light Air Cleaners: A Way to Breathe Easier in Your Home in 24-48 Hours.

Ultraviolet light units mounted in home HVAC ducts have had mixed reviews over the years with respect to their effectiveness. In most cases, however, where air cleaning effectiveness was in question, it is because the bulbs were not full 36 watt laboratory strength, and UV bulbs were not placed in the both before the coil and after the coil for maximum effectiveness. In reality, there are lots of studies that show conclusively that the best HVAC UV air purifiers do work very well, provided that they are used correctly.

When you place the UV bulbs in both locations, mold, bacteria and viruses are received two doses of high-level ultraviolet light. Whatever sub-micronic particles or organisms that are being pulled in from the air in the home or building will be treated with that UV light and a very high percentage of them will be destroyed, so as not to ‘infect’ the cooling coil with fresh live mold spores and other germs. This will help keep the coil cleaner, as it is often the greatest source of air contamination because it’s always wet and being hit by pollutants that need moisture to thrive and multiply.

The other set of UV lights placed in the HVAC or air conditioning duct work after the coil will kill any organisms that might still be releasing from the coil as air is blown across to cool it, again provide that the bulbs are at least 36 watts and preferably a two bulb system for maximum disinfection. If you install allergy grade filters in your home’s central air conditioning system and put UV light air cleaners (two bulb system) in both before and after duct work, you should notice a sharp decrease in any coughing or sneezing you may have been experiencing-and most people that do this say they notice they are breathing and sleeping easier and better in as little as 24-48 hours.

There are several things to watch for, however, when purchasing an ultraviolet light air purifier system. First, again, the bulb strength must be 36 watts or higher. The successful studies all found that the best UV light air cleaners use 36 watt bulbs or higher as this provides enough ‘light units’ to kill various organisms successfully. Lower quality or cheaper UV light systems often have low wattage bulbs and they are simply not going to do much good. You also want a plastic or nylon mounting system—those with metal mounts tend to rust and need replacing. And finally, be sure to replace your UV bulbs at the time recommended by the manufacturer, rather than peeking in and taking a look. UV light can permanently damage your eyes, so when installing replacement UV bulbs, turn the units off, replace the bulbs, close the duct work access door, then turn the unit back on.
