Activated Carbon Air Filters: The Key To Truly Clean Air

A lot of people think that just having a basic air purifier system is all they need to completely clean the air. And most air purifiers with HEPA filters do a pretty good job of removing dust, mold spores, and other particles from the air in our homes, offices and rooms. As good as HEPA filters are for removing particles, however, they are powerless for removing odors, chemicals, vapors, gases, etc, as the fiber in the HEPA filters does not attract or stop chemical or gas-based compounds.

Believe it or not, odors and chemical vapors are constantly released from cleaning products, solvents, paints, carpets, and other sources in our homes and offices and for many they cause headaches, sinus irritation, allergies, asthma and more. To remove pollutants like these, you must have high-quality activated carbon or charcoal air filtration system, and preferably with filters containing granular charcoal or military grade carbon, not crushed. Crushed carbon is often found in cheap carbon filters, does not work very well, and is basically a waste of money.

To be most effective, the carbon needs to be activated. Carbon is usually activated by adding chemicals that cause the carbon to be attracted to the chemical or gaseous compounds floating in the air. When air passes through the carbon, the chemicals stick to the carbon, leaving only clean air coming out of the filter. The best activated carbon air filters use granular carbon, which consists of tiny round granules that have much more surface area than crushed carbon—which means they will absorbs several times more pollutants.

Military grade carbon is a very strong type of carbon that is used in military gas masks to stop chemical agents, and some air purifier filters feature this type of carbon. The activated carbon in these filters does become saturated with chemicals or fill up over time, however, and must be changed if you want to continue to breathe clean, odor and chemical free air. You may not think there are enough vapors to matter, but over 80% of the time, there are sufficient amounts present in homes and offices with unfiltered air.

Many people using activated carbon air filtration systems to reduce odor and chemical sensitivities notice a return of their symptoms when the filter is ‘used up’ and think there is something wrong with the air purifier or that something else is wrong. Often this is not the case, and it is simply that the air cleaner needs a replacement carbon filter. And a lot of people deal with chronic headaches, allergies, asthma symptoms and more while in their homes, rooms, and offices and may not know that there are chemical and gaseous pollutants in the air that are causing a problem.

If you have some symptoms like this and can’t really put your finger on it, but those symptoms seem to be worse or more frequent when spending time indoors, it may be worth your while to try a quality air purifier with a good amount of activated carbon in the filters, such as those from Aller Air or Austin Air. These air purifiers have filters with anywhere from 12 to 36 pounds or more of activated carbon in them, and they do a great job of removing chemicals and odors from the air—so well that they are often recommended by health professionals.

The main point, however, is to make sure to use a sufficient amount of quality activated granular carbon if you want chemical and odor free air and make sure to change the filters as recommended by the manufacturer, or when you begin to notice that odors or symptoms seem to have returned.
