Air Purifiers for Cat Dander: Why You Don’t Want to Be Without One if You Have a Cat.

Cats, in general, are great pets. They’re smart, playful, loving and often less trouble than other animals—or are they? Granted, cats don’t typically get into things as much or chew up your favorite slippers, but their dander (hair, skin oils, litter/fecal matter, etc) do tend to be more of a health hazard for a lot of people, and not just allergies. If your cat stays indoors, and you don’t have a pet air cleaner with a good HEPA filter and activated carbon, you’re being regularly exposed to a lot of air pollutants that not only make allergy and asthma symptoms worse, but also carry bacteria and viruses that cause us to get sick several times a year for apparently no reason. Wonder why cat odor is just a little tougher to get rid of? It’s because there is more dander and it’s usually more ‘concentrated’—and that means greater chances for chronic allergies and illness.

Though so lovable and majestic, what makes cats more of a ‘health hazard’ is the types and amounts of dander regularly produced and some of their ‘marking’ and other habits. Indoor cats not only clean and preen themselves, which releases skin flakes, hair, and skin oils (which contribute to odors), but also do a lot of ‘marking’, such as rubbing various parts of their bodies on furniture, walls, etc. This marking habit is more of a territorial thing, but for our purposes, it helps spread all kinds of cat dander—and when air blows across this dander, the hair, skin flakes, skin oil molecules all become airborne. Dogs and birds don't do this kind of marking. And without a HEPA filter to trap the hair and particles, and carbon to remove the odors, all of these pollutants are free to enter our noses and lungs, creating or increasing allergy symptoms and other ailments. Second, cats spread feces-laden cat litter particles everywhere, too, and some particles are too small to see or vacuum up. This litter is another big health hazard that cats bring to the table that other animals, dogs, birds, etc., do not.

The other main issue is that even though some people aren’t sensitive or reactive to it, cat dander is one of the strongest allergens known to man. And if your cat sleeps with you, the potential for allergies is increased about ten fold as you’re deeply breathing in cat dander for 7-8 hours, straight from the source. Even in this situation, if you have an air cleaner designed for pets, that will dramatically reduce the amount of airborne cat dander and definitely lessen any respiratory problems related to poor air quality.

But take care when looking for the best air purifier for cat dander , as manufacturer claims are all over the board and some just aren’t true. The best pet air purifiers will have several key features: 1) a true HEPA filter, and 2) a significant amount of activated carbon to remove odors, at a minimum. The more carbon, the more odors will be absorbed. Some of the best pet air cleaners will also provide healthy negative ions with further purify the air by destroying bacteria and making it easier for particles to be trapped. Some air cleaners even feature anti-bacterial plastic or filter ingredients as well as an extra layer of protection. Winix and Austin Air are two brands that we highly recommend for pets—i.e. cats. The Winix 9500 has all of the features listed above and it’s a great value. The Austin Pet Machine is actually more effective for odors simply due to its 15 pound carbon / zeolite odor killing filter. So if cat urine or dander odors are a big issue, we recommend the Austin Pet Machine. The point is, however, don’t skimp on features when it comes to pet air cleaners—if the purifier doesn’t have all of the features above, don’t buy it because it may be ‘low cost’ but it won’t do a proper air cleaning job, will likely cause more problems, and will end up costing you more money when you have to replace it.

Industrial Air Cleaners: Handling Chemicals? Got Employees? A Filtration System Could Save Your Business

If you have employees that are handling chemicals, or exposed to chemical fumes or other harmful industrial air pollution, having the right industrial air filtration system in place could save your business. It’s true. Not having an air purifier system, or not having the right unit could lead to health problems for your employees, OSHA fines, lawsuits, and possibly the destruction of the business you’ve worked so hard to establish. And it doesn’t have to be some big industrial company to need a filtration system—nail salons, laser engraving studios, and other pollution-laden work sites etc, need proper air cleaning, as well.

And a lot of business owners think that ‘ah, there’s not that much fumes’ or ‘I think I have enough ventilation, don’t need a removal system’. These assumptions are dangerous in several ways. First, some industrial pollutants are actually odorless and tasteless, such as carbon monoxide, but they are just as deadly. Even if the room or warehouse where your employees are working sems to have OK ventilation, your employees are still breathing a percentage of the pollutants mixed with the ‘fresh’ air. The problem is that most air pollution is something that we can’t see or just ‘get used to that smell’—when these pollutants are very small harmful particles, fibers, and chemicals in the air. And we don’t notice until it builds up in the body and causes health problems. At that point, you’ve got problems. And your insurance might not cover you at all if it appears that you were negligent regarding proper air quality control.

The good news is that industrial air quality control is not difficult to maintain, and these potential issues can usually be avoided. All you need is the proper filtration system designed for the space, number of stations where employees are working, and type of pollutants and you’re good. The best Industrial air cleaners use HEPA or Super HEPA filters to remove over 99% of tiny particles and fibers, and quite a few pounds (usually 36-120 pounds) of specially activated carbon tuned for the type of chemical pollutants present in the room, warehouse or office where filtration is needed. Some units are portable as well, and for some commercial situations where work sites or location of chemicals storage or use changes frequently for example, a portable unit can be very useful as it can be moved directly to the area where air cleaning is needed. For other situations where a large amount of air needs cleaning on a regular basis, such as a warehouse, one or more large volume ‘air scubbers’ may be needed to properly address air quality within OSHA standards, which usually require 4-6 complete air changes per hour. Think of your industrial or commercial air cleaner system as a good secondary form of insurance for your business. And over time, as you have less employee downtime, less equipment maintenance, less cleaning expense, etc, the unit will more than pay for itself. Plus, it’s usually tax deductible.

At Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, we sell the very best portable and fixed commercial air purifiers and filtrations systems, quality air scrubbers, air sanitizers, replacement filters, even custom designed air filtration systems for virtually any commercial, industrial, or office situation. And since we are an online store, we don’t have the overhead of traditional stores, and we pass the savings on to you with discount prices and free shipping to anywhere in the Continental U.S. If you have any questions, please give us a call toll-free at 1-800-701-2513. We have industrial air quality experts standing by who can help you put together the right system for your situation.

Whole House Air Purifiers: The Best Way To Get Clean Air For Your Entire Home?

Recent studies have shown that most homes have a significant degree of air pollution. This pollution is composed of dust, dust mites, mold, pollen, fibers, vapors from cleaning products, solvents, paints etc. It’s also been shown that these pollutants definitely cause allergies, asthma, and now appear to be related to many more serious diseases. Naturally, we all want to breathe clean air wherever we are in our homes, , and we don’t want health problems, so we have to find a way to remove these pollutants from the air—without spending a fortune, right?

To remove these pollutants and get clean air in the entire house, we have a couple of choices: either buy several top rated room air purifiers or get one whole house air cleaner, which is far cheaper and you don’t have to move air cleaners from room to room. Electronic whole home air purification systems attach easily to furnaces or air conditioner ducts and clean the air before it goes out into the ducts. And the best top rated whole house air cleaners include a true HEPA filter and powerful activated carbon filters, which remove over 99% of all particles, fumes, vapors, etc., from the entire home, not just one room. That means wherever you are in your house, you can rest assured that the air is being cleaned. And quality deluxe full home air filtration systems are only around $1000-1500 or so, which is a lot better than 4 or 5 room air purifiers that cost $7-800 each! And, whole house air purifiers, even the deluxe units, will only require one set of replacement filters. Having only one set of filters to change, alone, will save hundreds of dollars per year.

Keep in mind, however, that all electronic whole house air filtration systems are not the same. Cheap whole home units tend to either only include a HEPA filter or only a small amount of carbon, and these will only partially clean the air in your house. HEPA filters cannot remove gas or vapor-based pollutants and without enough properly activated carbon, these pollutants will pass right through the filter and out into your home where your family can breathe them. And often, gas or vapor pollutants are responsible for asthma attacks, so we need to make sure these pollutants are removed as well.

Our best recommendation is to choose a deluxe electronic whole house air cleaner from a reputable company, such as Aller Air, with not only extra strength ‘super-HEPA’ filters, but also anywhere from 12 to 36 pounds or more of properly activated carbon—a filtration system that is proven to clean the air in your home better than anything else on the market. We also recommend that if your ducts haven’t been cleaned in the last couple of years, to make sure and put vent filters in at the floor or wall vents for extra protection from anything that might be in the air conditioner or HVAC duct work after the whole house air cleaner.

Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, we are proud to sell only the best whole house air purification systems, replacement filters, and more from Aller Air. Aller Air is known for quality air filtration systems that are rated #1 for allergy, asthma, and MCS sufferers. And, since we’re an online store without the overhead of traditional store, we can pass those savings on to you with the best discount prices and free shipping every day. Portable Home and Office Air Purifiers: The Key to Better Health?

It’s been shown in studies for years that good health has a lot to do with quality exercise, sleep, good eating habits, vitamins, etc. And your eating habits, how much water you drink, whether you take vitamins or not, etc. seem to have more of an effect on your health than anything—other than the air you breathe, that is. That’s right. You can do your best to do all the right things, eat the best food, exercise, sleep well, strengthen your immune system and more, but more recent studies show that if you continually breathe polluted air, eventually these pollutants will cause problems, regardless of your other efforts—problems like allergies, asthma, skin rashes, cancer, heart disease, even premature aging!

Don’t think you have air pollution in your home, room or office? Think again. On a more obvious level, if you see any dust that has accumulated or if there are any odors you notice when you first walk in the door (before your nose gets used to it), you have air pollution, plain and simple. Dust that has accumulated means that dust was pretty well distributed in the air—some of it settled on furniture, window sills, etc, and some of it you inhaled. Dust isn’t just dust, either. It’s been shown that most home and office dust is composed of dust mites, mold spores, pollen, fibers, bacteria, viruses, and other particles. And odors aren’t just ‘smells’—they are composed of airborne chemicals, gases, and residues from everything from paint, solvents, cleaning products, carpets, copier toner, chemicals used to treat wood used in the construction of your home or office, etc.

And when you inhale enough of these pollutants, the body finally sounds the alarm and begins to react. That’s when we notice allergies, asthma, or other health problems and can’t seem to figure out what happened or where it came from. Mystery illnesses, headaches, extreme sensitivities or allergies, recurring coughs and colds, sinus trouble, etc. can all result from polluted air created a polluted internal environment in our bodies that causes disease and discomfort. Why is indoor air quality such an issue? That’s mainly because Americans are now spending over 90% of time indoors and breathing about 3000 gallons of air per day. If 90% of that air is polluted and you don’t have an air purification system in place, that’s 2700 gallons per day of air loaded with dust, bacteria, viruses, chemicals, etc going into your body. That’s a lot, and it can really cause problems.

The good news is that cleaning up your indoor air is very easy to do with quality portable home and office air cleaners. The best air cleaners (not necessarily the most expensive) use true HEPA filters to remove 99.97% of these pollutants, and many include activated carbon to remove the chemicals and gases, leaving nothing but clean air. And why portable air cleaners? Because they are just that—portable, which means you can take the unit with you instead of having to buy multiple HEPA air cleaners. Then after running the air purifier for a week or so, open up the unit and take a look at the prefilters and HEPA filter (usually white in color). That dirt, or discoloration you see is the dust, mold, bacteria, etc that you’ve been breathing prior to buying your portable air purifier—but now, the air purifier trapped it and you didn’t have breathe it. You might even notice that you aren’t sneezing or coughing quite as much, or don’t feel as tired early in the day.

Should you just go and buy any old air cleaner at your local retail store? Absolutely not. You wouldn’t buy a certain brand of soap if it’s known not to clean very well and leave dirt behind so you have to wash again, would you? The same is true with many cheap air cleaners found at these retails stores. A quality home or office HEPA air cleaner will include a true HEPA filter, an activated carbon filter with at least 2-3 pounds of carbon, a strong motor to cycle all the air in a room in just a few minutes, and a good warranty. Most cheap air cleaners don’t offer all of this and you need all four, at a minimum, to effectively clean the air. Anything less will ultimately leave pollutants in the air, and be a waste of money when you have to buy a replacement, since cheap air cleaners are made of cheap materials and not designed to last. The cheap air cleaner manufacturers are counting on the fact that you’ll go back to the store and buy another one when the first one breaks, so they can have repeat income from your hard earned money. Not a good deal. The best quality portable air cleaners or home air filtration systems do cost a little more but they last for years, have solid warranties, use less energy, and clean the air very well.

At Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, we sell the very best quality portable room air cleaners, and replacement HEPA and carbon air filters. Since we are an online store, we don’t have the overhead of traditional stores and we pass those savings on to you with cheap discount prices and free shipping every day. Get the Right Pre-Filters for Your Air Purifier for Best Results–Especially for Smoky Rooms.

Replacing prefilters in your air purifier is an important step to make sure you get the maximum life out of your HEPA and carbon filters, but making sure you buy the right type of air purifier prefilter is important, as well—especially for smoky environments, rooms, etc.

Air purifier prefilters have one main function: to remove larger particles and substances that would clog up a HEPA or carbon block filter prematurely, resulting in costly 3 month main filter changes. And in most cases, changing the prefilters every 3 months is adequate. For smoky environments, however, not only is it recommended to that you replace prefilters every 1.5-2 months, but also that you use the correct type of prefilter. Prefilters for smoky environments need a tar-trapping substance blended in with the filter material to stop ‘globules’ of tar from slipping through and staining your HEPA filter, and clogging both the HEPA and carbon filter.

A lot of air purifier pre-filter manufacturers recommend or offer a carbon prefilter made of a black foam-like material, stating that it will help with odors. First of all, there isn’t enough carbon to really have any odor-reducing effect, and second, that does not trap the troublesome tar mentioned above. And if your air cleaner is designed or smoky environments, the prefilters should be of the proper ‘tar-trapping’ type—if not, perhaps that air cleaner isn’t as good of a deal as you thought, because without this type of prefilter, you will be spending quite a bit on replacement HEPA and / or carbon block filters.

There is one other possible solution, however, if the prefilters are the only problem: find some aftermarket prefilter material and cut to fit. Prefilter material is the only situation where you can sometimes get away with using aftermarket or non-manufacturer filters. The HEPA and carbon filters have to fit very well to prevent leakage and that requires that they be proper prefilters, from the manufacturer for best fit. For prefilters, however, a ‘good’ fit is good enough, and it’s often much cheaper to ‘roll your own’ for prefilters, as long as you get the right type for a given situation. If your air purifier comes with a prefilter, we do, however, recommend that you buy manufacturer-made replacement prefilters for best fit and performance, unless it doesn’t trap tar and you need that for your situation.

At Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, we sell replacement HEPA and carbon pre-filters for several top air purifier brands such as Austin Air (such as their HM 400 series), Aller Air and others. We will soon be offering generic replacement prefilter material in large and small sheet sizes, so that you can buy in bulk and save. If you have any questions about air purification, prefilters, or anything indoor air quality related, give us a call at 1-800-701-2513. We have air quality experts standing by to help!

EPA Rates Poor Indoor Air Quality in Top 5 Health Threats--Use an Air Purifier to Avoid The Danger

The EPA in 2011 cited indoor air quality in the ‘top 5 major threats to our health’, along with heart disease, cancer, etc. And you know when the government finally puts out a warning about something, 1) it’s serious, and 2) it’s been proven, and 3) it’s been going on for quite a while. And it only makes sense since there are a lot of studies that clearly show that nearly all homes and offices have significant levels of indoor air pollution.

That, coupled with the fact that, as of 2012, Americans are now spending well over 90% of their time indoors, at home or the office, creates a lot of opportunity for air quality related health problems. Humans breathe in about 3000 gallons of air per day, and without an air purification system, if we’re indoors 90% of the time, that is 2700 gallons of polluted, allergy and illness-causing air we, our babies, and the rest of our families are breathing—every single day.

What types of home or office air pollutants are we talking about? It’s mainly dust and fumes or gases from cleaning products, solvents, carpets, paint, copier toner, etc. Ah, but dust isn’t just dust. A recent analysis showed that dust brings with it a variety of other pollutants, such as dust mites, dust mite fragments and waste products, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, bacteria, viruses, and more.

Dust mites and related particles are some the highest allergy triggering substances known to man, and currently responsible for nearly 60% of asthma cases worldwide. Do a Google search on dust mites and you’ll see what we are talking about. And then we have those allergy and asthma-aggravating vapors and gases that we can’t see that have also been found to be present in sufficient amounts in almost all homes and offices, as well. Add to that pollutants from building materials used to build your house such as treated wood that often leaks arsenic, fiberglass from insulation, any smoke related pollutants that are present, and you have significant potential for indoor air pollution. And again, without a proper air purifier or filtration system in place, you’re pretty much guaranteed to be constantly breathing in those pollutants.

Don’t think you have indoor air pollution or don’t need an air purifier? An easy way to tell is to look around—if you see any dust on furniture, shelves, etc., or smell any kind of different odors as you walk into your home, room or office, air pollution is there. Yes, cleaning does help, but then we often notice that in a few days dust has settled on those surfaces again, right? That means that your home, room or office is constantly releasing pollutants, which is normal, but not good to breathe. If you have smokers in your home, residual smoke odor, or other bothersome odors, you’ll definitely want a quality air filtration system as those odors are actually chemicals, tar, and other troublesome allergens & particles that are floating in the air—and if an quality air cleaner doesn’t remove them, your lungs will take them in. There is a saying ‘you can either use an air filter or your body can ‘be’ the air filter…the latter of which is definitely not healthy. If you own an industrial business where air quality is polluted on a regular basis, having a quality air purification system in place can mean the difference between healthy employees and profits—or sick, low producing employees, lawsuits, and OSHA fines.

Cleaning up your indoor air, whether it's in a home or commercial application, is easy and inexpensive when compared to how much you can save on allergy medications, boxes of Kleenex, gas spent going to the store, the doctor, even cleaning products--not to mention preventing lawsuits from employees in commercial situations. The best electronic air cleaners or air filtration systems use both HEPA and carbon filters, negative ions and sometimes UV light.

The HEPA filter removes and controls allergens like dust, mold, pollen, pet dander, and the activated carbon removes the gas or odor based pollutants, such as paint fumes, smoke, etc. Some units even have electronic sensors to detect when pollutants are in the air, which is great for conserving energy and making sure that pollutants are removed as soon as they are detected. Be certain, however, to only buy an air purifier that includes a true HEPA filter, as only true HEPA filters are certified to remove 99.97% of the particles on the first pass. And make sure the unit has a solid amount of activated carbon, at least 2-3 pounds (or between 36 and 120 lbs for industrial air cleaning situations) to effectively remove the gas-based pollutants.

Cheap air cleaners are not the answer, however, such as many of those found at typical retail stores. The problem with these cheap air cleaners is that they most often have a sub-standard HEPA ‘type’ filtration system (not true HEPA) and small, cheap, low output fan. A cheap air purifier’s fan doesn’t circulate the air very fast (can take an hour or more to cycle the air in a room), and this slow operation causes us to breathe a lot of the polluted air before the air purifier can clean the air, which aggravates allergies and asthma, and really makes a cheap air cleaner a waste of your hard-earned money. The best top rated air purifiers have strong motors that can remove virtually all pollutants in a room in less than 5 minutes, and continually makes sure you are breathing clean air in your home or office, and even reduce the chances of catching a cold or flu.

At Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, we sell the very best top rated electronic HEPA and activated carbon air purification systems, filters, smoke and odor removers, and more. And since we are an online-based air purification store we do not have the overhead of a traditional business. These savings are passed to directly to you allowing us to offer the best top rated name brand air purification & HEPA filtration units for sale at everyday cheap discount prices. Replacement Carbon-Charcoal Air Filters: How Long Do They Really Last?

Carbon or charcoal air filtration systems are great for removing odors, chemicals, and gases from the air, if it’s activated carbon or military grade carbon that is in the filter. But how long do they really last and when do you really need to replace them? It’s harder to tell if a carbon filter is used up because you can’t see the dirt like you can with a paper or HEPA filter. Still, you don’t want to replace them too soon as that can be harder on the pocketbook. You do, however, want to replace your carbon air filters on time for sure. So how do you know? What's the safest way to think about it?

Carbon air filters are kind of like say, a piece of paper with some glue on it—if you drag the paper through some dust or dirt a few times, it will pick up that dirt—but once it has picked up all that it can, new dirt won’t stick to the paper. And it’s kind of like that with carbon and chemical air pollutants. The carbon does become saturated with the pollutants in the air, and once saturated, the chemicals and vapors don’t ‘stick’ to the carbon anymore—and that allows polluted air to pass right through because your HEPA filter isn’t designed to stop chemical or gas-based pollution. And THAT means you definitely need to replace the carbon air filter in your air purifier when you notice that odors are not going away or that you start to have more sneezing, coughing, or other reactions that had previously gone away or were reduced when the filter was newer. Other than the manufacturer’s recommendation, this is a good way to know if you need to replace the carbon filter because odors are chemical-based and again, if the filter isn’t stopping them, that means the chemicals are passing right through and the carbon filter is pretty much ‘full’ or needs replacing. And the air purifier with the activated carbon filter you bought is essentially worthless if it’s not trapping the chemicals, odors, and vapors in the air. Make sense?

So the best way to think about buying replacement charcoal filters, is to do it 1) certainly by the manufacturer’s recommended date or time period, and 2) sooner, if you begin to smell odors or notice sensitivity symptoms again. These sensitivity symptoms, especially for those with MCS, can be moderate to severe and in rare cases, life-threatening, so for those individuals, it’s a good idea to replace the carbon filter as soon as you notice symptoms or odors returning. This is true even for military grade carbon as all carbon does get ‘used up’ with use. And the same is true for any charcoal air filter, regardless of the brand of air cleaner you’re using. Some carbon air cleaner filters with more ‘pounds’ of carbon do last longer, yes, but they too will become saturated over time, and actually create more of a hazard now since the air cleaner fan is blowing polluted air around without removing the pollutants!

For industrial activated carbon filters, it is even more important to replace them on time or before time, as gas or vapor based industrial pollutants are very harmful and can cause employee illness, downtime or even death in a short period of time if not monitored correctly. And you may be found at fault if you’re a business owner being sued for employee health problems if didn’t replace the carbon or charcoal air filters appropriately! At the very least, you’re leaving yourself wide open to OSHA complaints and fines by not replacing carbon air filters properly. Some carbon filters that are trapping combustible materials actually become an explosion hazard when full, so if you’re not sure, check with your air purifier manufacturer for better direction on when to replace your charcoal filters in your filtration system, based on the types of pollutants being removed.

At Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com, we sell the best replacement carbon filters for both home and industrial or commercial air filtration systems, for all the best air purifier brands like Aller Air, Austin Air, Blueair, Electrocorp, Tiger, Winix. And since we are an online store and don’t have the overhead of traditional stores, we pass those savings on to you with cheap discount prices and free shipping every day. Fume Extractors: Use One and Save Your Health!

Fumes from various cleaning products, solvents, industrial processes, nail salon products, hair salon products, are all composed of chemicals and residues that have become airborne. These fumes, vapors, VOC’s and gases are foreign to the human body, and when we breathe them in, our bodies react, whether you feel it immediately or not. Some people are very sensitive and have reactions in the form of headaches, eye, ear, nose and throat irritation, to sneezing, coughing or other allergy & asthma type symptoms.

The real danger is the medium to long term effects of breathing chemical fumes, which can include major organ damage, and several diseases to include cancer, COPD, Alzheimer’s , ALS and more. Though some fumes are encountered in home and office environments (from cleaning products, carpets, toners, etc), most are found in commercial or industrial work sites and settings. Processes such as welding, laser engraving, soldering, landfills, etc., produce all kinds of harmful vapors and gases that must be removed immediately to prevent inhalation, with units such as a source capture fume extractor.

The good news is that extracting these fumes is not difficult with the right systems in place. Companies like Electrocorp specialize in fume extraction and are #1 in the industry for value and effectiveness, even creating custom carbon blends to remove specific types of pollutants! It is important to realize that all fume extractors are not the same, and just because they feature a carbon filter doesn’t mean it’s effective for the type of fumes that you want to remove. And often, to fully address an industrial work setting’s air quality control properly, you will need both source-capture units or air cleaners at each station and a fume-extracting air filtration system attached to the air conditioner or furnace as well to clean up any dangerous residual fumes that might be lingering. Once you have these fume extractors installed, you’ll not only have peace of mind knowing that your air quality is good for you and your employees, but you’ll likely see productivity go up because as people are breathing cleaner air, they feel better and generally produce more—with less trips to the doctor, as well! In fact, using a industrial fume collector  may be one the best, most important ways to protect your health if you are regularly exposed to harmful airborne chemicals and gases. Nail and hair salons often have high levels of chemical fumes and definitely need to consider installing a fume extractor or air filtration system.

Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com is proud to be an authorized Electrocorp distributor, one of the very best manufacturers of quality industrial and commercial fume extraction systems in the world. In fact, Electrocorp is the only brand of fume collection systems that we offer, and that is because of their unmatched effectiveness, reputation for quality, and value. And since we are an online store, we don’t have the overhead of traditional stores. That means we can pass those savings on to you with cheap discount prices and free shipping to anywhere in the Continental U.S. Whatever chemical, gas, fume, or particle filtration system you need, Electrocorp has a unit perfectly designed for that purpose. Can You Make HEPA Air Purifier Filters LAST LONGER? Yes, You Can!

Replacement HEPA filters, though very effective for removing particles and keeping allergies down, they aren’t cheap, especially for some brands of room air purifiers. And if the air cleaner doesn’t have a pre-filter to stop the larger particles from clogging it up, that HEPA filter is only going to last about one quarter of what it’s supposed to—which means you have to replace the HEPA filter every 3-4 months instead of 1-2 years—and that can eat into your budget big-time! Why? HEPA filters are designed to trap the smaller, more dangerous micro-particles, usually around 0.3 to 0.1 microns in size. When there is no pre-filter on the air purifier, or the HEPA filter is not washable (most are not washable) the larger particles clog the HEPA filter prematurely and prevent airflow, which keeps them from doing their jobs.

So what’s a good solution to minimize having to buy replacement HEPA air purifier filters too soon? Well, one thing you can do is install vent filters–placed in the vents that blow air into your room. What’s a vent filter? It’s usually made of a foam material that is electrostatic (becomes charged as air flows through), and this charge makes particles stick to it. You can buy both pre-cut filters and sheets of filter material at stores like WalMart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc, and they are usually very cheap. These vent filters will stop a good amount of the larger particles that would normally clog a HEPA filter. For room air cleaners that don’t have a pre-filter, some people cut a piece of the vent filter material and place in front of the HEPA filter. And no, this won’t affect how quiet the air purifier is. Having some kind of pre-filter plus installing vent filters will not only make your HEPA filter last longer, but will definitely improve overall indoor air quality and help keep allergies under control.

Pet owners often have to replace their HEPA filters more than anyone else, because hair and hair fragments clog the HEPA filter very quickly. Using a vent filter will definitely help prevent hair and dust from prematurely clogging your HEPA filters if you have pets. And if you do have pets, make sure to brush them or have someone do this to prevent excess hair from blowing around. And, there are a couple of other things you can do to make your HEPA filters last longer—you guessed it: regular vacuuming of carpets, floors, upholstery, pet bedding, and mopping. Most good vacuums have a HEPA filter and the more you can vacuum and mop those particles up, the less they will polluting your indoor air and using up your HEPA filter.

And yes, vacuuming out a HEPA filter does help some, so you can do that, too. Got dusty clothes? Don’t throw ‘em in the closet—throw them directly into the washer. This keeps the dust from having a chance to get out onto your floors. And finally, it seems like commons sense, but make sure to replace your air conditioner filters regularly, and use one that is 1200-1500 or allergy rated. They’re a lot cheaper than replacement HEPA filters and they can stop a lot of dirt, dust, and other allergens from floating around in your room.

For industrial or commercial work sites, the same applies: regular sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, etc, can really cut down on buying replacement HEPA filters too soon. Source-capture dust collectors also help prevent large particles from clogging a HEPA filter. However–when you seem to be sneezing and coughing more than usual, it’s probably time to buy a replacement HEPA filter, especially if the filter is over 6 months old. Most people that don’t do the things listed above or have air purifies without a prefilter, tend to have to replace their HEPA filters every 6-8 months on average.
